Wylie went in for her check up today . she was only in last Wed but because she stopped prednizone on 6/29 we are monitering closely. She had her spleen removed on 5/9, seems like yesterday. FOr 11 years old she is doign great on this front ok GREAT NEWS her hematocrit was up to 44 from 39 last week yaa hooo!! The bad news is she has been losing weight. After her splenectomy she she lost 6 # and held that for a month, which is normal. Since then she has been losing steadily, down 3# she Is now 42.5 From last week to today she lost 1#. I brought my other dog for a recheck ear infection and weighed him, he was the same, so not a scale issue and I can see the bones on her back starting to protrude and she eats like a horse. She had a TLI PLI run for pancreas/intestine and a cobaltbirilim (sp?) that measure vitamin B absorption. So waiting for these tests to come back and for now she is on pancreatise w is an enzyme which helps with the pancreas. ANyone have experience with pancreas or vitamin b Issues? Laurie

Hi Laurie, Congrats on the great hematocrit! Keep it up Wylie! My dog Benson was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) 11 years ago and I have given him Viokase-V, a pancreatic enzyme supplement plus special intestinal formula dog food for every single meal ever since then. He was diagnosed with IMHA almost 4 years ago. I do not believe that the two are related (although it must feel like Wylie is being overwhelmed with new conditions :-( ). The TLI is a test to determine EPI. The other things to watch out for that will impede absorption are low Vit B12 (yep, you are looking into that) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Am sure that Wylie is being tested for these. Benson received a series of Vit B12 shots last summer to which he responded nicely. The treatment for SIBO is usually a longish course of an antibiotic like Flagyl. But all three conditions (EPI, low vit B 12 and SIBO) are both related and very manageable. When Benson was being diagnosed, first he weighed 90 pounds. He lost weight very very quickly (while eating like a horse) and weighed 65 pounds when he was finally diagnosed. He also had horrific diarrhea. It took him a full year to finally regain the weight and even then he only got to 80 pounds. He has always been a slim dog who loses weight easily and regains with difficulty (the envy of many humans!). Keep us posted and I hope that Wylie continues to get improve. Take care, Aden

Thanks for the info Aidin. The vet did mention the intestine but nothing about a bacteria, I will ask about the SIBO. The TLI test has to be sent out of state and about 10 days to get the TLI back so a long wait THanks Laurie

this post is very intersting to me because my dog Sway has been hanging around the 16-28% mark for the last 9 or 10 months. we cannot get her over the 30 hump for the life of us, and ive suspected absorbtion issues. she gets vitaminb12 shots and iron shots, SIBO is something that my vets dont give much thought to but ive always thought that it might be playing a role in keeping her down. interesting. i hope wylie keeps recovering
