Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Wylie is throwing up

I just posted on the ohter thread about making an appt for Wylies teeth cleaning and how she was throwing up, well its getting worse, I gave her a wheat cookie afternoon and half an hour later she threw up she drank some water 15 minutes later she threw up.

ANy ideas? why oh why do these things happen on a week-end, it means a trip to the ER. My vet is open in the am, but her primary is off and the other vet that has no history of Wylie, so I need to have them fax Wylies history to the ER clinic, if this where this leads.

She had an episode similar to this 4 years ago, and they thought it was panreatitis, and she was treated as such, it took 4 days for the test t to come back and it was negative, she just slowly recovered.

The other thing is my husgand put an additive on our pond to clear the chlorine and Wylie drank just after that, I am praying so hard, this is not a reaction to that

Laurie,
Well Holly got into something a few weeks ago, we didn't think she had, but she must have. Broke out into hives, same thing throwing up everything she ate, diarrahea with blood, was just a mess! We ended up giving her oatmeat and baby food diet to calm her stomach down, spent $350 at the vet for him to keep her over night and he ended up giving her Clemastine, withing a few days it was over. Maybe like you said a reaction to the pond additive??? We always watch Holly so carefully out in the yard, but all we can think of is that she somehow got into something that made her sick with the reaction. I think she lost a few pounds in a few days because she could not keep anything down.
Hugs to Wylie to feel better soon!

I'm so sorry Wylie isn't feeling good right now. Try to hold tight for the evening and see what the vet says tomorrow. Your right, things always happen on the weekends :( Maybe it would be good to let Wylie's stomach take a rest overnight. No food or drink until tomorrow morning if possible. If your worried about dehydration, maybe eye dropper full of water in increments. I don't know anything about this, but maybe ideas would help. I will keep Wylie in my thoughts and prayers Laurie. Hopefully Wylie just got into something that didn't settle right and things will be better tomorrow.

Linda, so glad to hear Holly is feeling better. I just couldnt wait until morning since she has been doing this since Wednesay that I know of

Mardi, thank your for your thoughts I hope you are doing okay.

I was thinking of waiting until the morning, but the ER vet does low costs vaccinatins the first week-end of every month, and its packed, not to mention the health of the dogs so I just got back

I hate going to the Er since they dont know you and the vet looked about 20 years old, I know thats bad, so they gave her a shot of some anti vomiting stuff and a shot stomach protectant and sub fluids so I kept asking are you are sure this is okay with an AIHA dog? Its wierd but I felt like saying, I have way more experience with this disease than you. She said the specialist was in and she would verify to make me happy that it was okay. And then tells me it could be cancer, and if she is not better an ultrasound. I am taking a deep breath.

I am surprised no antibiotics since I said she was eating something she thought was really good last Saturday like turkey poop my other dog was enjoying it too but he is just fine.

Laurie:

So sorry to hear about Wylie. I went back and reread your post about the teeth cleaning and am wondering if Wylie might have some type of gum infection that is causing this? Maybe there is some discharge that is draining down her throat into her tummy and causing her problems? Just a thought anyway.

Also, Sheba had her teeth cleaned last November. At that time she was off pred (mid September) but still taking Atopica. She did fine but I do have to admit that we were worried. More because of her age (11 1/2) than her IMHA status.

We will keep you in our thoughts and hope Wylie feels better soon. Keep us posted.

Rita, the thought of a possible infection from the teeth is a good one. This is a foolish reason for me putting off Wylies teeth, since I have experience with teeth work and getting infections afterwards

Bacteria from my dads gums after treatment ended up in his lungs, he was in the hospital for a month and it almost killed him.

My moms dog developed an abcess on her cheek after her cleaning/pulling of a tooth and had to have it drained for a month.

My mom had gum surgery and ended up with staph infection in her sinuses.

And then my other dog had his cleaned last year and they pulled 2 molars, he was in horrific pain for a few days. My vets other assistant did it and I amnot sure if was actually needed. She said they were cracked. Well I have molars that are cracked and my dentist said they could last 7 months or 7 seven years, well its been five years with no problem.

I have an appt on Tuesday with her regular vet so hopefully she will be feeling better by then and we can decide what further treatment if any is needed and proceed with the cleaning.

Laurie,
I know what you mean about being paranoid about Vets that don't know your dogs history as well as feeling like they are just humoring you when you express your concerns. Hopefully Wylie will feel better soon. I am thinking of you both.
