Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - why was azipiothene prescribed?

Wylie had her relapse 2 weeks ago her hct was down to 27 at 50# she was presribed 20 mg pred and 50 mg azi, when she was first diagnosed in April she was on 30 mg pred.

Why the azi? Joannes websitre said its for heavy duty when pred doesnt work so I am confused.

I emailed Dr Dodds and she said these meds were okay.

But I still dont understand why Azi is prescribed in a case like this

can someone fill me in?

Thanks

I'm not sure why your vet chose to use azathioprine this time but not last. I don't think it's used only as a heavy hitter anymore though. I think vets are using cyclo or aza commonly now. Bonnie and I have noticed that there seems to be some regional differences in what drugs are used, with vets here in Chicago tending to go with aza before cyclo while others seem to favor cyclo before aza. It seems rare to me to see a dog on pred only. How is Wylie doing now?

Hey Laurie,

The aza/imuran route will help further suppress the immune system. It is an added measure so that Wylie does not continue to drop. A lot of cases need that boost to get things moving in the right direction again-- just my layperson's understanding of it. Hang in there Wylie! We're all pulling for you!

Wylies up from 27 to 31! She goes back on Fri for another test
