Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - What to feed/Nutritional support

Hello all,

I find this discussion very informative but also confusing. Right now due to Gracie's pancreatitis I am feeding her cooked bland, lowfat food but I am not sure what to do afterwards. I hope I am not hijacking your thread Carrie, especially when it began with a question about blood tranfusions?

Maybe I will start another thread at some point but I am truly afraid to begin a raw diet with Gracie even when she is better due to her compromised immune system where she has had bone marrow failure.

Gwen,
I have fed raw for at least 35 years. I am originally form Europe and that was just what was done there, you mixed your own raw food, usually horse meat with oats and veggies. I have switched to high end kibble for convenience, but always came back to raw. When Kahlu was sick with AIHA I cooked his food on advice of Dr. Dodds and our vet. Dr. Dodds recommends raw for healthy dogs. My plan was to do this as soon as Kahlu was of medication or at least at a very low maintenance dose. Unfortunately we never got there. I don't see a reason why you could not get back to raw, once your dogs immune system is working properly again.
Best wishes,

The thing with home cooking is that it's only temporary...if you want! Feeding raw is a great choice IMO for healthy dogs! I've heard soooo many good things about feeding a raw (BARF) diet to dogs!

I home cooked for Tessy when she was battling this disease and had great results! Her liver values were hardly ever high, her stools were great (once she got used to it), her weight was stable, and her energy was great. The whole reasoning for me to use the liver cleansing diet was to protect her liver from the hard drugs she was on.

NOW, you gotta remember that this diet is more for a dog that already has a liver condition BUT with these drugs it's only a matter of time before the liver becomes damaged. Consider this treating liver damage *before* the damage occurs! This diet isn't a guarantee for a healthy liver but it does help and will prevent damage from being worse than it could have been.

Myself, I modified the diet for Tessy's needs. I added 1-2 scrambled eggs daily, brocolli, boiled lean hamburger (I always encourage hamburger over chicken cause chicken is considered am inflammatory meat by TCVM's...meaning it can cause inflamation), small amounts of liver or beef heart (boiled) given as treats throughout the day. etc. I used to use spinach/swiss chard for her (& still do occasionally) but these foods are higher in oxalic acid so you gotta be carefull especially in dogs with arthritis as they've been known to cause/worsen arthritis AND we all know that long term pred usage is linked to arthritis in dogs!!! A good sub for these veggies high in oxalic acid would be kale or turnip greens...good source of iron and bvitamins.

The reason *I* avoided the premium kibbles when TEssy was sick was due to the immune boosting supplements in them. I was even iffy about giving multivitamins in the beginning which is why I switched to Pet Tinic. The diet above is sufficient as far as vitamins and minerals go and you can take the egg shells that are left over from the eggs, dry them, crush into a powder and give each day (1/8-1/4 teaspoon daily)...this gives the daily requirements for calcium. I also recommend people use Knox Nutrijoint daily (or plain geletin). This helps to prevent/heal joint weakness and is safe to give.

Aside from the Liver Cleansing diet already given, here's another site to check out...

Hope this helps some...I gotta headache so can't think clearly! LOL
