Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - What tests would you recommend?

Hi
My Golden Ginger is having her PCV checked on Monday and I was wondering if there were any other tests she should have done while she is there, just to make sure the medicines she is on aren't doing damage to her other organs. She is now on 40mgs of predisone and a 1 tablet of Imuran every other day, along with pepcid and milk thistle. My vet may suggest further testing but I just want to be prepared to suggest if she does not.

Cheryl,
Ask for the cbc (complete blood count), ask for a mini chem screen for liver and kidney, (however, if you have never done a full chem panel it might be a good time to do that.) You will probably see a high alkaline phosphatase and possibly higher alt and ast as well. If you have older chem screen to compare with you will know whether these high numbers are from prednisone only. Try to keep in mind that the liver in general often regenerates from this damage and in-and-of itself is not something to be overly alarmed with.

If you have never had a Snap4dx test for heartworm, lyme and two other tick diseases, ask for this to be done as well to rule out. This is an excellent test and well worth the money.
