Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - What happens if hi doses of pred don't work in 5-7

Hi

This is probably a situation some of you have been in - what happens if the initial high doses of prednisolone don't work in 5-7 days for PRCA?

Is the dose lowered anyway? And is it a sign that regeneration is less likely?

Thanks,
Claire

Claire,

If you have not read these two Success Stories at the Meisha's Hope AIHA/IMHA Web site (both these dogs had PRCA) you might want to do so. These stories and the links they contain may answer some of the questions you have

Both of these dogs had PRCA and did recover.

This abstract on PRCA may be helpful to you

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12420831?dopt=AbstractPlus

Please read the whole abstract which is short but here is the conclusion and I quote:

" CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dogs with PRCA appear to respond readily to treatment with immunosuppressive drugs; however, hematologic responses may not be observed for weeks to months after initiation of treatment"

Many times it can take a very long time for dogs with PRCA to get into the recovery process.

Hi Claire
The ped. and the Aza did not work for Ginger it was when we added the cyclo. her PCV began to rise and it took about 4 weeks. However I must add her PCV never went below the low 20's.

After two weeks of being on the high dosage of pred the vet did begin to lower it and after 4 weeks of the cyclo her PCV began to slowly rise.

We are keeping you baby in our thoughts and prayers

it took chance several months to become regenerative again. not until we added cyclosporine (as Atopica). the high doses of pred did not work. then it was about 3-4 weeks before a positive response.

do not give up hope.
