Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - What are standard blood platelet readings?

I am confused, I read another post about the platelets being 9000 and being extremely low , They checked Wylie tonight and they said 525 which they said was great, what am I am I missing here?

I tooke her in for he 3rd check up since her splenectomy. Because of her ravenous appetite and losing 2 #in 45 days they did a full CBC.

And I about fainted when the vet tech came in and said look at all of these red spots on the stomach, they were the size of a quarter, so my immediate thought was a platelet problem but again they ran platelets which I dont know how to read since she was 525 in everyone here says in the 1000s. What am I not reading/ right?

Thanks

I am as confused as you are with regards to the numbers others have posted. It does sound like Wylie is having clotting issues though. Keep us posted.

Laurie,

I would guess the vet means that the platelets are 525 thousand, although it might ease your mind to call the vet and ask.

This page should be very helpful to you in learning about platelets:

Most sources I know of state that 150,000 platelets is the low end of normal for a dog. And usually at 50,000 the risk for sponaneous bleeding can occur ... though it doesn't always. Sierra started spontaneous bleeding at about 15,000 platelets. So, you can see why, at 9,000 it would appear to be extremely low (which I why I made the comment). I would agree with Joanne that it is likely that Wylie is up to 525,000 platelets. imo, this is a good thing to see at this point...though excessively high platelets can bring problems too.
