Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - weaning off Pred

After 2.5 years, my boy is finally at a juncture where I think we are looking at weaning him off the pred.
He has been holding strong with very high numbers on his pcv tests and we are now down to an every 6 week check....for many months during the last 2.5 years we checked every 2 weeks. His check on Saturday was 52.
I was thrilled. It's been a very long, scary battle and as most of you on this board know he was stricken by the toxic pesticide fibronil used to create the flea control product FRONTLINE. At this juncture he is on 1/2 of 1mg mg every 5 days and I was going to decrease again to once a week now that the count is holding so steadily.
I am just wondering how long one continues with the decrease before total stoppage. Is the once a week regimin necesary. Any suggestion is welcome. I have not yet heard from the vet who usually consults from VHUP. To those of you with very difficult situations, hang in there. Choe preented initially with a pcv count of 9...so there is hope.
And please, with spring coming up, try to find another alternative to flea control as opposed to the commercial flea control products sold in your vets ofice. Please know they are not regulated properly by the EPA and can/do kill and seriously compromise the health of domestic animals. If your dog gets sick from an application, they will deny any responsibility and lie to your face that the product is safe. Jan

Jan,
That is fantastic news for you and Choe!!! So happy for you both! I think our babies are going to be okay, but always worrying in the back of our minds will it be safe to completely stop the pred. As this week is Holly's 2 year mark also, initially with a PCV count of 8 and also now in the 50's, I too look forward to the day of no meds for her which hopefully will be in the next few months. I will be real curious to see how her numbers are holding next month on her blood draw after being off of the aziathioprine for 2 months and if so what Dr Dodds will suggest to do on decrease of prednisone. Depending on what your vet says, but maybe you could try stopping for like 2 weeks and test just to make sure??

Again, FANTASTIC NEWS!

Jan and Linda,
Congrats to you both. It has been a long journey for Choe and Holly and I am so happy for you all.

From all I've read it's well known that Pred. reduction needs to be VERY gradual. Why then are 3 vets (1, a "specialist") saying a 50% reduction is ok!?? I don't get it!
So frustrating when Layla's counts were all normal April 27. Then after weaning her completely off in a matter of weeks here couns are all down.

Who & where is Dr. Dobbs? Would like to she her.

Thanks,
Terese

Just what I needed to hear this morning! Thanks! We are off to the vet for blood tests in an hour. Kahlu is still on 30 mg per day (2 doses) he is doing ok but still pretty tired. I know the vet wants to reduce but I will dig in my heals. The last 2 reductions were small, but in shorter intervals (with Dr. Dodds approval) I think he needs the 3-4 weeks on this dose.
Terese,
Dr. Dodds is reachable through hemopet.com My vet has consulted with her twice so far. I have read both, reduction from 25-35% and 25-50%. I tend to error on the side of caution.
Again thanks for sharing the good news! It is so important to hear that, when your dog is sick and you can't see the end of the tunnel.
