Greetings Everyone, Our little 5-month old Westie, Henri, is doing very well. His blood results last week showed that his hematocrit continues to increase (at last check 34%). His anemia is regenerative. And he is tolerating his medications very well. Also, he had no agglutination at his last blood check--Hurray!! We are worried about these terrible medications in our growing puppy. He is currently on: cyclosporine 50mg, AZT 12.5mg, prednsione 7.5mg, and pepcid. We were wondering which drug should be weaned first? And how should it be tapered? We don't want a relapse but we, also, don't want him on these drugs. Any thoughts on this, particularly, in a puppy with vaccine-induced HA? Thank you, Ella, Jeff, Bella, and Henri

I'm not sure which drugs should be weined first. I was wondering that same question the other day. Hope you find your answer.

Ella, Good news about Henri! Since each and every case is different with AIHA, consult your vet for medication protocol. I asked my vet the very same question last visit. Her response was "any medication used long term, is not good". In my Ren's case, the Vet wanted to slowly reduce the pred then the Aza. Lastly the cyclosporine. The pred of course has terrible side effects. But with Ren, her blood work shows elevated liver values. Since Aza can be hard on liver function, she wants to reduce the Aza. There is that delicate balance of meds that will throw the disease into remission without doing too much damage to bodily organs. Aza and Cyclosporine are more long term and a slower acting drug while Pred is the first defense. I firmly believe that the meds must be reduced ever so slowly. Ren was on meds for four months the first time. Perhaps she was removed too quickly; she relapsed eight months later. SUE
