Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - We are having a great morning!

I was so worried about Aiyana yesterday, she seemed so pale and weak. When we saw our regular Vet on Monday, he still did not know for sure what we were deaing with, but did not think it was cancer. He put her on more meds because of her liver I guess. She is now on prednisone - but he cut that down to 20 mg. amoxicillin, ranitodine, ursodiol, same and milk thistle, I am adding rescue remedy to their water. I did start Dr. Dodds liver cleansing diet with her yesterday - thank your for the recommendation. My Vet had said lots of brown rice, whole grain pasta etc... well good luck getting her to eat that YUCK! She seems to love the mixture of potatos, and because I had already cooked up tons of chicken we are using that.

This morning I was greeted by the famous retriever very loud and strong whip tail LOL... thump thump thump. It was music to my ears! She jumped up to get her pill in liver sausage, she ran again to eat, she took both steps at one time to go out this morning. Her eyes look like her old bright eyed self. I am still very much on guard, she is 12.5 years old, but I feel better this morning.

Praying for all of you,

Julie

I wanted to add, in case any of you go thru this same thing. Also some of you that have some veterinary experience may understand what has happened here.

Aiyana started meloxicam for her arthritis pain on Saturday 9-27, dosage was 1/2 of a 7.5 mg pill once daily, with a whole dose being given the first day, and on any days she was really bad. Aiyana started feeling better on Sunday evening. Monday and Tuesday she was good, then a bout with diahhrea late Tuesday evening, early Wednesday morning. Thursday morning is when the vomiting and bloody diahhrea began... thats when I knew I had a very sick dog on my hands. I took her in and asked if it was the meloxicam... they never seem to admit when it is.

I had looked up side effects of meloxicam and will share with you the link.
It seems to me it presented itself just as they list the side effects - Aiyana may be a rarity, but I still think there is a good chance the meloxicam did this to her. Please let me know what you think....

Julie -- so glad to hear your girl is on the road to recovery. I'll have to check out the link later, but wanted to let you know my joy at Aiyana's improvement. Please take care and keep us informed.

I read your first email and reminded myself about Meloxicam and what it was. My first thought was that these drugs (arthritis related) while they work in some dogs are notorious for causing this type of problem. So I totally agree about the meloxicam. I still think the Deramaxx may have been a trigger in our case but unproven since it was an acute reaction.

So I would say if you get her through this, you probably have a trigger and may be lucky enough to get her off meds.

At some point for the arthritis you may want to look up a product called Dog Gone Pain as well as hyaluronic acid and the many Glucosamine supplements as well. Adequan is another.

You don't mention SAMe/Denosyl but this is good for high liver levels as well.

Good Luck

Thank you both,

Yup our girl seems to still be doing well, her gums are nice and pink and holding LOL. She is able to get up and go outside (prefers to lay on the wood floor so has a hard time getting up sometimes). She was barking at everything this weekend... I had not heard her bark since this started. She knocked our huge Sibe over this morning - shocked him LOL. I am still feeding her the liver cleansing diet but adding 1/4 cup of kibble in there too - am worried she is going to get too thin.
The only pills she is on now is 20 mg prednisone in the am, ursodiol in the am, milk thistle, SAM e and ranitodine. No more antibiotics.. yay!
I spoke to the vet this morning, had to adjust dosing on the sibes pheno... talked to him about Aiyana and he said I can wait until Wednesday to bring her in for more blood work. Mondays there are awful, and tomorrow would be Wolfies birthday (I don't want bad news on that day). Taking her there takes a lot out of her too, I would prefer a few more days of seeing her this strong first.

blessings,

Julie
