Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - We are hanging in there!

All, Summer seems to be doing really well. It has been over 2 weeks since her last blood draw. We had an appointment this week, but were unable to make it due to the unusual weather here in North Texas. Okay, Johnny before you laugh at me for not driving in the snow, keep in mind, Texas is ill prepared for snow, even though it is the 3rd year in a row we have had a decent amount. This year is actually the most we have had and we have also had quite a bit of ice. That said, her vet is on a very icy unplowed stretch of road. Hopefully, we will be able to take her in on Tuesday next week.
She is able to jump on the sofa with ease now, with a degree of difficulty and a lot of encouragement she can jump on the bed. Right now, she is happily chewing a fresh rawhide at the foot of the bed.
She LOVES the snow, but I am careful not to let her spend too much time in it.
Anyway, we will be back to give to an update when we have her blood tests next week.

Carrie,

Glad to hear Summer is doing well.

I can totally relate about the snow and ice. I live in Virginia close to the ocean and we rarely see snow. The day after Christmas we got a foot of snow and everyone was in a panic. I have four wheel drive but I admit I am scared to drive in the snow because I know I can't drive in it plus I am terrified of all the others out on the road that think they "can" drive in it. Lol!

Please keep us posted on Summer's progess!!!

Carrie,
I am so glad Summer is feeling better. she probably enjoys the snow because dogs on prednisone are usually hot. I don't think there is a problem if she likes to cool off out there. I would how ever be careful if it is icy. Due to her muscle loss he joints might be fairly loose and she could easily get insured if she slips. I am sure things will keep improving for Summer!

LOL @ being scared to drive in flurries!!! hehehe You silly Texans crack me up!

Good to hear Summer's doing good and getting better! Rawhide scares me ...Tessy isn't allowed it!! The pred makes them so hungry I'm scared she'll chew off a piece too big for her and choke or cause blockage! Eeek @ the thought!

Keep us posted,

carrie,
I am not a fan of rawhide either. I have heard too many horror stories of dogs getting internal injuries. If summer likes chewing maybe a Nylabone would be better? Although there are people that think they could be dangerous too..... We become a paranoid bunch:)

Hello all, we only use natural beef rawhide, and ONLY fresh ones under supervision. She used to eat only raw before IMHA, so Summer is used to chewing. Nylabone is really no better than a rawhide as far as safety. Maybe we should just get some bully sticks..
anyway thank you for the concern, Last PCV was in the normal range, 38.4!
We get tested again, next week.
So, we are movin' on up :)
Summer is happy but has gained some weight.
We have started walking again, so hopefully we will both take of a few!
