Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Vaccinating Joey

Hi,
Sorry I'm not so good as to be able to respond to individual people on this site but this is a response to Kath in Scotlands enquiry on Joey's Update.I made the decision to let Joey have his boosters with help from my vet.We are "lucky" for want of better word,Joey's AIHA is confined to his spleen not his entire system like my poor George who had he survived wouldn't have had them done.At the beginning his spleen was grossly enlarged but for 4 months now has been normal size.He is thriving and is at this time off all meds (except Piriton). We didn't make this decision lightly and discussed it and the consequences thoroughly. One of the major factors in doing so was the fact that it was confined to a specific organ and that there are alot of dogs around here who haven't been vaccinated.Hopefully I won't regret doing it but for now all is well.
Best Wishes to you all,
Corrie & Joey.

Corrie,

Have you considered doing titers to check if Joey even needs immunizations? I know you did not make the decision lightly, but with the titers done you would at least know that it is necessary.

Best wishes,

Thanks for your reply Corrie.

I didn't even realise that AIHA could even affect a single organ so I learnt something today too. Glad to hear Joey is so well that he could recieve his vaccine.

I was also wondering if anyone in the UK knew how much titers cost to have done.

Kath,
I paid a ridiculous amount for titers for one of my non-aiha dogs. I then found out Dr. Dodds offers them at a really resonable rate. The costs of shipping might perhaps be cheaper than doing the tests at home. It is worth looking into.

I have an iron rule. Only one immunization at a time. They used to give multiple doses at once. This is too much. I wait several weeks between shots as well.
