| Well, Matilda has yet another urinary tract infection - or at least that is what the symptoms appear to point to. The last one that we cultured showed resistance to several antibiotics, but appeared to resolve after 14 days of simplicef. Now, 5 days after her last simplicef, she has blood in her urine, foul odor and peeing constantly in small dribbles. Per vet's suggestion we are going to do another ultrasound and another culture, just to be sure what is going on. I have had her on cranberry juice extract every other day for the past 3 weeks. Does anyone have any other suggestions I might try? Does anyone know how much cranberry is too much? and how much is needed to be effective? Are the tablets/capsule better and more concentrated than the actual juice concentrate? thanks for your help jeanne & maltida |

| Hi Jeanne, I'm no vet or expert, but it sounds like the infection may have moved up to the kidneys - blood in urine, drippling pee...foul oder. An ultrasound may or may not show this, just as a culture i read often does not identify kidney infection. Please ask you vet about this. I don't know about the cranberry extract, but it can't hurt, i dont think. Is she in pain, making any noises when she pees, does she run out the door to pee like she is being chased then cant pee? | Jeanne, In some resistant cases of a UTI that travels up the urethra to the bladder, they need to actually sample the bacteria inside the bladder. This test sounds, at first, to be dreadful, but is actually not very traumatic for the dog. They use a needle to go through the skin of the dog into the bladder to obtain the sample. I am not sure why your vet is not aware or offering this test to you, but you can ask them about it. Patrice http://www.marvistavet.com/html/urinary_tract_infection.html "The ideal collection method is cystocentesis: a needle tap directly into the bladder. In this way, an uncontaminated sample is collected directly from the bladder. Sometimes a little blood is accidentally enters the sample during the needle stick but for culture purposes, the sample should be pristine." |

| No - she does not seem to be in pain right now, and actually after about 8 hours on the cranberry juice extract seems to be peeing a little more and less often. (I added about a tablespoon of cranberry extract to her drinking water, and then about 2 teaspoons to her food) Patrice, that is the procedure the vet described for the culture he wants to take, and he said they would do that when they did the ultrasound. I just hate that she has to go through all of this and I feel so helpless. I know she is uncomfortable, but thankfully does not appear to be in pain - yet. I want to get all the tests done so I can get her on some meds to fix the problem. Thankfully, the cranberry juice does seem to be helping some, so I guess I need to have patience. I will definitely ask the vet about the possibility of a Kidney infection and how to approach that. thanks. jeanne & matilda |
