I have a 6month old shih-tzu, the cutest little thing ever. Recently i've been giving her dried cranberry fruits , reason being is that she pees whenever she is excited and pees on my guests so i figured she has a weak bladder, and every time i give her she pee on her self. Its like she doesn't even feel it coming it just comes!! Does this mean that she has UTI and the fruit is just flushing her out or is it just flushing her out period. In addition to the cranberry i also give her fruit snacks like mango, apples, cantaloupe, papaya and some other fruits mixed with yogurt but her main food is pedigree. So i just wanna know what is happening to with her cause im tired of cleaning up her accidents.

Monique, I think your best bet would be to make an appointment with the vet and have a full urinalysis done (as well as examination). I there a smell at all to the urine or is it tinged in color (redish/orangish slightly)...if so then you most definetely have an issue. ALSO, if a dog is drinking much more than usual then this could also indicate UTI or Kidney problems. AGAIN...more reason to have a vet check this out. I really don't think the dried cranberry is doing this. Cranberry is more a preventative than anything and I also don't think the fruit is doing this....however...I'd also limit the amounts of fruit you give her at such a young age...and no raisins or grapes or onions, etc. Pedigree isn't exactly the best food to feed either. I'd consider this nearer to the bottom of quality foods to feed AND you should have her on a small breed puppy chow for now. Does she pee from excitement or is it just random? Young puppies like this could still be learning bladder control. If it is excitement related then the best thing to do is limit excitement. Avoid eye contact when entering and try not to acknowledge her UNTIL she has calmed down. Totally ignor her like she's invisible until she's totally calm. Crate training could also help here! Most dogs/pups will learn quicker by doing this! More frequent potty breaks also. Johnny & Tessy

Monique, This is a common thing that puppies do called Canine Submissive Urination. This is a normal canine behavior done mostly by puppies (but some older dogs will do it as well) in order to "appease" their pack leaders. This is a message that says "I am young and helpless, please don't hurt me." It is annoying to human owners because they don't want their dog to pee in the house and on themselves. Your puppy doesn't know that it is wrong and in fact, thinks this is appropriate behavior when surrounded by people it considers higher in the pack. Read this excellent article about this and how to condition your shih-tzu not to do this. http://www.hilltopanimalhospital.com/submissive%20urination.htm my best patrice
