Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Urinary infections

Hi Everyone,
I'm not new to the forum and not new to AIHA, but Bandit is doing excellent and in the process of being weaned from his pred and cyclo. However, he continues to get urinary tract infections and for the second time now is on amoxicillan, this time 2x's per day for 3 weeks. His vet (UCD Vet Hospital) tells me this is common for a dog on these meds. Has anyone else had this problem?

Keiko has never had a urinary infection but she is not on cyclo. She is on pred and Imuran.

Murray developed an UTI that was very antibiotic resistant by the time we found it - he was completely asymptomatic because of the Prednisone - it masks the typical symptoms because it is an anti-inflamatory and, because they typically drink more on Pred, the urine is more dilute so they don't pick up the overgrowth when they might otherwise.

I have read that dogs on immuno-supressant drugs may be more prone to UTIs because their bodies are less likely to respond to the opportunistic bacteria. I remember a post from Otto mentioning he has used cranberry to fight UTIs - research has indicated it keeps the bacteria from adhering to the bladdar wall - my holistic vet indicated CranActin was a good choice, so you may want to ask your vet about that as a way to fight UTIs in addition to traditional antibiotics.
