Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Update Toby
| Toby has remained lethargic for the past 2 weeks. The antibiotics evidently did the trick. His white blood count is normal now. However his other count is 17 so the vet put him on 20 mg pred a.m. and p.m. each. This concerns me. Toby is only 20 pounds! He also suggested that if this doesn't do the trick he would have to go on chemo. Could someone enlighten me what this is about? My hubby asked what about transfusions. The vet assured him that chemo was the next step. He is also on thyroid pills once a day. Thanks for all of your advice. This site is a life saver! Mary |

| My dog who weighed approx 70 lbs was initially put on 120 mgs of pred a day (2X 60 ea) along with the Azath and cyclo. When you Vet is saying Chemo drugs is he giving any names? How experienced is he in treating this? You might want to seek a second opinion with a specialist before you make any further decisions. You might also want to contact Dr. Dodds at hemopet she is a specialist on thyroid issues and may be able to give better suggestions if Toby has Thyroid problems in addition to the AIHA. Penny |

| Thank you. I emailed Dr. Dodds. I remember seeing a list of specialists but now I can't find the web site. There were some in Lafayette In, but we're actually closer to Lansing MI (not to mention it's near family). Does anyone know where I can look? Thanks Mary |

| I heard back from Dr. Dodds this morning. She gave me a lot of information. I think that is what the vet had in mind but I will take it to him. I still would like to know where specialists might be near the Fort Wayne area. Mary |

| Mary - My Indiana/Michigan geography is not good but you may want to see how far Michigan State would be for you to travel. My understanding is they have a veterinary teaching hospital (as does U of I in Champaign/Urbana). I have seen the link to get to board certified internists on this board so you may search for that on this site or through Google/Yahoo. Best of luck, Bonnie |

| Thanks. I found it. There is a link on Meisha's Hope site. My niece got her vet (large animals) degree from MSU so I emailed her if she could recommend anyone in particular from there. Mary |
