Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Update on Tiggs

We have just been devastated reading all of the heartbreaking losses here. Our hearts are with everyone here, through the good and the bad every day.

I wanted to just post an update- not really a whole heck of a lot going on with Tiggs, which I suppose is good.

He's on 20 mg Pred/day to keep the ITP in check, and I think we're on track. I'd like to reduce the meds a little faster, but my vet is conservative.

I just hate seeing his little pin head whittling away...he's lost 10 lbs since going back on Pred. He also seems a little depressed I have to say, and that kills me the most, but I really do think it's because the meds make him feel crummy. And, he's developed what I call the Pred Manners - he'll chomp(literally just chomp) your food right out of your hand! He's just starving, poor guy. You all know how that is.

PCV has been great, just those pesky platelets now.

All things considered, he's doing great, I'll just be happy when we can get back to a maintenance dose to help him feel a wee bit better.

Thinking of all of our dear friends and furkids here.

Hi Melissa and Tiggs

Sometimes I get scared to open some threads, but Im pleased Tiggsie is hanging in there, albeit with effects from the drugs - hope you can reduce soon for the sake of his wellbeing, poor sausage he is!

All the best to you both

Melissa,
when I took Kahlu in to the vet one of those last times, I mentioned to the vet that there is a dog on this forum that relapsed with ITP. She said I'd rather Kahlu had that. I think all she was saying, ITP is easier to get under control than AIHA. I KNOW Tiggs will beat this.
A friend of mine made a donation in Kahlu's name to Best Friends Animal Society. I know that is the organization you volunteer for.
Poor Tiggs, I would be depressed too. Just keep telling him, he will feel better again soon. 20mg is already down quite a bit, he will be in the maintenance range in no time. Will you keep him on a small dose indefinitely?

Hi Melissa,

I'm glad all is stable with Tiggs, even though he's got the yucky Pred side effects.

The 'Pred' manners are something I'm sure we can all relate to - I'm sure if Millie wasn't a tiny dog with a small mouth, I'd have lost my some fingers when I hand fed her meds to her wrapped in ham....

He'll be on a maintenance dose soon enough, and you'll have your darling boy back.

I'm so glad all is well with him.

Take care,

Samantha & Millie.

Melissa, I was thinking about Tiggs the other day so I'm glad you gave us an update. Poor little fella. You were saying that the PCV is great but the platelets are the problem. Does that mean that the platelets dropped since your last post? I thought you said they were in the normal range last time? Maybe it's just me remembering wrong.

In any case I'm SUPER glad and thrilled to hear things are headed in the right direction. Hopefully you'll be able to wean from the pred before he gets any more pred symptoms. I know exactly what you mean about the pred Chomp! Tessy is the same way still and she's down to 7.5mg daily. Add the fact that there's 7 other dogs waiting by her side to see if something drops and this makes it even worse cause she thinks they're going to get it before she does! LOL The little GOBBLER...as I call her.

I'm with his doctor on being conservative with the pred reductions. The last thing we want is to wean too fast and have to start all over again. Hang in there. Tiggs has a good knowledgeable MOM that knows and does what's best for him. Keep up the good fight and thanks for the update.

Prayers and special thoughts for Tiggs.

Hello Melissa, I am soooo glad to hear some good news. I started to dread as well checking the site as I felt like everytime I checked it I eneded up in tears again. So definitely keep us posted with all the good news I am sure you will be getting in the future and continue to keep an eye on those fingers. I am sure poor Tiggs would just consider them extra protein..lol Thoughts and Prayers...Kelly

Thanks friends! Brigitte, I'm thrilled that someone made a donation in Kahlu's name to Best Friends. I'm now working for them full time, and it's very inspiring to be able to help more animals. Kahlu's legacy will help us help so many, so thank you and your friend for that. I will say a prayer at Angel's Rest for Kahlu and all the kids the next time I'm at the Sanctuary. It's a very comforting and amazing place. As far as Pred he will most likely stay on Pred now for life, since his system is just so wonky.

Johnny, his platelets are in the normal range, but they aren't exactly super stable, so they go up and down every couple of blood draws- hard to say if it's statistical, I'm still working my way around those numbers. But for some reason, even though the dose is so much lower than his past IMHA doses, it seems to have affected him quicker and more severe, wierd. But, he's a trooper, so I know all will be well soon.

Love to all of you and your furballs both here and at the bridge.
