Yeh! Maggie's last blood work is up to 40.5 She is much more active. She eats more (from prednisone) and drinks a lot of water. I'm a little concerned about the effect all this water is having on her kidneys. She needs to go out every 20 minutes it seems. I forgot to ask the vet if I should cut down on her water a little bit? Too she is very gassey but that could be from the beef chunks I'm giving her. (I hide her pills in them so taking medication has not been a problem? The Dr. said if she continues to hold her own she may start tapering her prednisone soon. She is very happy with Maggie's progress and so are we. Anyone with any suggestions for the gas?

Dorri, I am very glad to hear that Maggie's hct is up to 40.5! That is well wnl! You are correct that the prednisone is causing all this drinking, hunger and peeing. It is important for her to drink plenty of fluids at this time. You might try slowing or restricting fluids closer to bedtime. Remove water several hours before. Or try giving her ice cubes or chips to satisfy her urge to have water, this will decrease the amount of water intake nearer bedtime. Prednisone could possibly be altering the natural flora of the digestive system. If Maggie can tolerate it, try giving her some plain yogurt each day. You might also go to the health food store, check their refrigerated section for beneficial bacteria supplements. These will help as well. Avoid foods that have significant amounts of grains like wheat, corn or soy. These can pass through to the colon undigested and bacteria there will create horrible gas from this. If you don't feel up to making a homemade diet, at least try to find a high quality kibble for dogs with special dietary needs for now. I am on a yahoo canine nutrition group called k9nutrition and you will find a lot of help there. It is excellent. my best patrice

Thank you for the advice. I had made Maggie a Beef and Rice mixture, and thought it may have been that, but let her go a few days with out it but the gas persisted, and now I'm suspecting that it's the canned beef chunks causing her gas. I have been giving her yogurt but it basn't helped just yet. It's supposed to have natural live bacteria in it, but it came from a store so who knows for sure. I'll get some from my MIL, she makes her own.
