Got Holly's bloodwork back today, good news and bad news. Her hematocrit is up to 52.1 which is fantastic! Bad news is her retic count is also on the rise again up to 1.6, and her WBC is also down again. Last month her WBC was 7.8 and this month is 3.9. I am faxing a letter to her internist in Atlanta to ask advice on what to do now. We have had her down to 1mg of prednisone 1/2 in am and 1/2 in pm and still on aziathioprine daily. Becasue her PCV is so good, I think I would like to hold at the 1mg of prednisone but maybe try going every other day on the aziathioprine in hopes of bringing up her WBC and maybe giving her more energy. She just does not have much energy at all, sleeps all the time, especially for having a PCV of 52.1 and only being 3 years old. I just don't understand how this WBC can go up and down so much. In the last few months we have only done a CBC and retic count, but I really think it is time to do a superchem and make sure there are no other problems. After 17 months just want this to be over but fear that she will always need to be on prednisone to keep her stable. Linda

Hi Linda. Great news about Holly's PCV. I agree with your thoughts of trying to go every other day on the azathioprine. Hopefully that will make a difference to Holly's white cell count. Good luck to you. deb and Duck

Thanks Deb, I am also thinking of having her thyroid checked I guess also another problem with lack of energy as well as her hair on her neck where they shaved her months ago for blood work has never grown back, and her belly is completely bald. Linda

Linda, I would definately have her thyroid checked. long term pred can cause hear loss and no regrowth along with listlessness. Good luck Laurie

Hi Linda. Also second the T3/T4 test. Her symptoms of lethargy for a 3 year old dog with a 52 pvc just doesn't jive. The baldness seems also to be a sign of thyroid deficiency. We have all learned so much in medical speak and clinical tests we feel often that we can direct the vets in mising clues! Keep me posted. Best, Jan
