Our vet called last night after getting back from her trip to check on Snickers. Apparently she has aplastic anemia instead of AIHA which we originally thought (my husband apparently doesn't listen too well). I've been searching the internet and can't find much on aplastic anemia, anyone heard of it or know a good site to check out? Thank you!

Rachel, We were misled by the diagnosis of aplastic anemia in the beginning when Chance's 5 attempts at a bone marrow tap came up completely dry, no cells. We talked about bone marrow transplants (only done for dogs on an experimental basis at one university) blah blah etc. It was when I contacted Dr. Jean Dodds I realized we had been barking up the wrong tree.... She insisted we begin on her protocol and pointed out that in AIHA the DESTRUCTION CAN OCCUR AT THE BONE CELL PRECURSOR LINE IN THE MARROW. And that is exactly what happened with Chance. It is considered the most severe form of AIHA, when there are no cells being produced. And furthermore, Chance was also not making white blood cells either. The tests showed, of course, that he had a very low count of reticulocytes in his blood. Not making blood, no baby blood cells = aplastic anemia? Not necessarily. I have read at least 25 papers on aplastic anemia and studied a 1000+ page veterinary textbook. I kept reading aplastic anemia, but kept flipping back to read about AIHA. It just sounded right to me and was confirmed by Jean Dodds. I just recently found more informaion to back that up. Contact Jean and talk with her. I think she can help you. patrice

Rachel, Is it possible that the vet said that Snickers has pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) which is one of the four types of AIHA. You can learn more about PRCA by clicking on this link from the Veterinary Manual http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/60205.htm In PRCA the immune attack apparently is directed at RBC precursors. You might also want to go to this page http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/archives16.htm and read about Macy (May 2006 Success story) who was digansoed with PRCA and is now doing very well. Over the years I have heard from many whose dogs were diagnosed with PRCA who are now doing very well.
