Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Turkey Breast for Dogs

I'm thinking about Thanksgiving and wondering if it's okay to give dogs turkey breast. I know that turkey skin and chicken skin are not good for them --- much too fat. I'm fixing an organic turkey breast and I know Darcy will be expecting her share. She always has a fit whenever we have chicken, so I always bake a small plain breast for her. My baby is spoiled.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Sounds good, Tiggs and I will be over at 4pm!

Really though, I can't imagine it's not ok, it's lean,
as long as you take the skin off, like you said. We give Tiggs boiled chicken. Just watch for bones, fat, etc. Plus...ya know...sometimes I just feel that quality of life is just as important, and the sweet girl would probably be ecstatic with a little holiday cheer.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Karen,
Have you given Turkey before to Darcy?? We had a dachshund in Florida who one year must have gotten a few droppings from kitchen floor and within hours she had an allergic reaction and broke out into bad hives for most of the evening. It was really bad, so we never give turkey anymore to any of our dogs.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow! I had never heard of a dog having a reaction to Turkey. That must have really put a damper on your day. My dogs are beyond spoiled rotten and they get their Turkey before my guests do. The only reaction I get is they go nod off for hours. I also save all the dark meat for them so I can't even approach the fridge for days without being attacked. I agree that for all that our poor dogs go through in this fight one day of a small portion of lean turkey can't hurt.

My Wiley Beagle also loved her turkey. She never begged at the table, but would lie on the rug in the living room where she could watch us all eating our Thanksgiving feast. Then when the turkey and leftovers were carried into the kitchen, she would get into position as my father-in-law (her beloved alpha) would place the remaining turkey into leftover bags. She received portions of white and dark, and yes, as Penny noted, then it would be off for a quick sniff outside and then a nice nap in her basket next to the fireplace!
