Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Trixie's hospital update 16/1

The vet called me at work this morning, she said Trixie seems to be doing ok, she wagged her tail at the vet this morning and went out for a short walk.
Today they will do another blood test, what the Vet did say was they want to reduce the Azathioprine because of what it's doing to her immune system, she said they need to be careful because of any reaction she may have. The other medication, Antepsin, they are going to try the liquid form on her as it may be easier on her stomache. Last night she did eat her dinner. The bottom line is they need to get the right balance of medication for her. A new drug might be given to her, this is not the one I spoke about last night on here, can't for the life of me remember the name of it. They will call me again this evening with an update and I'll ask then.
They also told me she will be there for a few days until they feel happy she has picked up and the medication is right for her.

I know it is hard having Trixie so far away but it sounds like she is where she needs to be right now to get the drugs sorted out. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for your kind thoughts x
I had another call this evening from the Vet, she still seems to be doing well. They have stopped as of today, giving her Azathioprine, because of complications (immune system/bone marrow) they will watch her careful now that they have stopped this medication. The pred will also be reduced slowly. Antepsin is now being given in liquid form, which will coat her stomach better than the tablets. Cyclosporin (sp) will be given in place of Azathioprine, it seems this medication will not effect the bone marrow.
Tomorrow they will do some blood tests, will check for abnormal cells etc.
The Vet said she is being as good as gold, not a whimper from her and no struggles with giving her x-rays etc. I thought, yup, "That's our Trixie"
She did say she will probable be kept there over the weekend as they need to monitor her carefully, given the change and reduction of meds.
She is dearly missed, but again I know, she is in the best hands.

Glad to hear that Trixie is doing better. Perhaps the New Year will bring ALL of our four legged friends better health.

Just had a call from the Vet, seems Trixie's RBC are remaining and not being attacked, also a test showed some quite bright redness (intestines) that dosen't look normal. This could be bleeding, I asked what would cause this and was told possibly the Pred. The Vet went on to say, they want to reduce the Pred, but have to be careful in case something else flares up. Tomorrow they will do a few more tests, they hope by Monday to see more improvement in her.
I can't believe she is going to be away for so long.
