Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Trixie update

I had a call from the Vet yesterday and Trixie's blood results have dropped slightly, her last test showed 40% and this time it's slightly lower, the vet has asked me to increase her Pren to 1 and 1/2 per day, 1 in the am and 1/2 evening. Once again she will have to be re tested in two weeks. I hate having to give her extra Pren, but I suppose it's all for the best. I remember when she was on 2 Pren per day and she was so miserable, you know kind of depressed and you feel so helpless seeing them like that.

Tixie,
Jaspers meds have been increased in the last week, and to be honest he doesn't seem to have shown any difference in his behaviour. Always hungry anyway, he may be panting a little more, but his energy levels are good.

It was me and not the vet who pushed to increase the pred to stop the hemolysis getting hold again. We have compromised and split the dose. The vet was happy to stay on the same dose for another month, but I wasn't so we have increased it slightly from 10 mg per day to 15, slit into 2, morning and evening.

Good luck,

Tricia,

Just a little under 40 is still not that bad. We had to increase Holly's prednisone back up to 5mg a day, we had her at 2.5mg every third day, but her retic count started to rise again.

Once she got down to 2.5mg every other day, we noticed a big change in her. Playing and full of energy, since we have had to increase back to 5mg every day, we have again noticed a big change the opposite way, lazy, not much energy, not playing hardly at all.

I too really hate this and having to do this to her. But I know she will one day thank me for helping her.
