| Early this evening Trixie was in the back garden, from the window I saw something red on the back of her coat,I went out to see what it was. Where she was standing was about 4 pools of thick blood! It was awful, my daughter and I carried her into the house, layed her down on the carpet and bathed her paw. I was shocked at the amount of blood pouring out, it just wouldn't stop! We rushed her to the vets, apparently she had torn the base of the nail and this is where all the blood was coming from. The vet cleaned her up and said he had to remove the nail. He pulled it off, Trixie was as good as gold, bless her. Her paw was then bandaged up and she has been put on antibiotics. Tomorrow morning I'll take her back for it to be checked. I was so worried as I know and type of cut can be bad news especially with AIHA going on. Tricia |

| Tricia, How scary for you. I don't have much time but here is an excellent, if a little hard to read, website on nail conditions in dogs. There is an autoimmune condition that can cause the nails to do this. http://lowchensaustralia.com/grooming/nailconditions.htm Read it through and talk it over with your vet. If this were me, I would also ask for a sample of tissue for histopathology to be sent out. Giant Schnauzers commonly get a very serious cancer of the toe and this is one of the first symptoms. Generally, most dogs are not prone to this, but black dogs are. On the other hand, it could be simply that she ripped her toenail! p |
