Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Trixie is coming home

Yayyyyyy, Trixie will be coming home tomorrow. She is reproducing RBC and they are remaining, her platelets are good also. She is now on 25mg x 2 per day (Pred) and Antepsin (liquid form) asprin is also being given now to prevent any clotting. The Vet said Trixie is doing fine, but to keep an eye on her of course and PCV tests to be done every so often to make sure they are holding steady. She went on to say not to expect to see a big difference as she is still panting, drinking and eating a lot (Pred) In the next 2 weeks her Pred will be reduced slowly, to a point where she will be able to have just one a day and gradually 1 every 2nd day. No doubt it won't be until she is on les Pred that I will notice a difference in her (panting, drinking etc)
So, tomorrow we shall be off to get her and I am sooooooooo excited!!

I am so happy that you can finally go pick up your baby !!

Please don't be in a big, big hurry to reduce the pred! I can only speak from what I have read as my baby didn't even get a chance to fight.
Hopefully some others will weigh in on this.
Yay for Trixie! :)

Tricia, I'm so glad for you. I remember how good it felt to be able to bring Duck home and dote on him!! I do agree with Mrs. Gates about proceeding very cautiously with the pred reductions. What is Trixie's PCV right now? We waited until Duck was in the normal range and held approximately the same numbers for a good period of time. That way we were able to feel confident that he had reached his normal before we started any pred reductions.

In any event, I'm excited for you! Keep us posted.

Tricia, I agree with Mrs. Gates. Please reduce Pred. SLOWLY. My Popeye had his Pred. reduced too soon, then had a relapse that he was unable to recover from.

Thanks for your replies. The Vet did stress that the Pred would have to be dealt with very slowly and as my local Vet did point out also it would be over a long period of time. I shall be taking Trixie on regular check ups (PCV) her PCV I believe is about 27 and I know they hope for this to increase.
Thanks again for all your support and advise.
I'll be sure to keep you posted.
