I noticed this evening whilst Trixie was sitting near me and I was running my hand down from her head down towards her neck area (back area) there was a wettish area, sticky. I had a look after parting her hair and there is a small patch with sticky yellowish stuff, the skin looked quite redish. I remember her having this before, a few months ago, it was on her leg that time. I can't remember the name of it (Staph....?) and if I remember correctly someone said back then it is caused by prolonged use of high doseage of Pred? I am curious why this has come back again, given Trixie's Pred has been reduced little by little since I last saw this (Staph...?) She is on 25g per day 1/2 am 1/2 pm. Many thanks Tricia

Tricia, Yes, this is most likely a staph infection, probably+ due to the high doses of prednisone suppressing the immune function. The immune system is not an on/off switch. It takes time for it to recover from suppression so it's possible she is still sensitive to the staph. There are a couple of excellent antibiotics that will work. Call your vet and see what you can arrange. Meantime, keep your hands clean before and after you pet Trixie to protect you and her both. Wash the area with some mild soap and blot it dry. My best, Patrice

Thanks for that Patrice, I guess I'm anxious because this has flared up again! I shall contact Trixie's vet tomorrow Tricia

Tricia, Don't be too worried tonight. We all have staph on our skin and in most cases it causes us no harm. Chance got this too and once I identified it I wasn't as worried. There is a form of staph out there that is very drug resistant called MRSA. It's not very prevalent right now, I would not worry. You can discuss it with your vet. Enjoy your evening. Patrice

Tricia, My Golden Retriever, Angelo, had Staph infections pop up numerous times while we were weaning him off of Prednisone. Just like Trixie's, it popped up on his back every time. Like everyone else said, just keep the area clean and discuss with your Vet. She will likely be put on antibiotics. Take care, Jeanne in NJ Angelo & Archie
