Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Trixie/biopsy

Poor baby, yesterday must have been awful for her, I know it was for me. She is rather quiet, the vet gave her some pain medication but couldnt give too much coz of the medication she is on, her tummy is shaved and also the top area of her left leg, thats where they did the biopsy, she has a cpl of staples there, they will come out in abt 10 days. I took her out last night as i know she needed the toilet, rather than take her in the garden, as there is a step up to it, I took her out the front. I cooked her some chicken last night with rice and she ate all that. I dont think she moved much during the night. This morning I took her out once again. She is pretty miserable, I can tell, having to deal with AIHA and now the soreness of the biopsy!

Take heart that she is wanting to eat. I take that as a good sign. If her stomach was sore then she would not want to eat.

Keep smiling

Poor little soul! When will you have the results of the biopsy?

Hi Sue, hopefully the results will be through next week, probably Wed/Thurs, perhaps earlier:+). I suppose, if the medication she is on is not doing what the Vets have expected it to do, hopefully whatever the results are next week, perhaps a new course of treatment will be made. I don't know an awful lot about these tests, I have looked through this site to see if anyone whose dog has had AIHA ended up having a biopsy as Trixie has done.

Hi Sue, yes, eating is a good sign :+), I have taken her out a few times for a walk, she actually ran a little, in the field close by this afternoon. She, of course, is still taking her medication.
Thanks for your replies by the way.

Tricia,
I really feel for both of you. Its so hard when its a pet, children you can explain things to but pets just look at you with those big brown eyes.

At least shes up and about, walking and eating, they are always good signs.

I have been thinking about you and wishing you both good luck,

Hi Tricia,

My dog, Murray, had a bone marrow biopsy after all other diagnostics for IMHA were negative. He was diagnosed with a less common type of IMHA, non-regenerative at the level of the marrow. The treatment protocol was the same as others on the board have indicated (Pred, Imuran, Cyclosporin) - it typically takes longer for dogs with this type of IMHA to respond.

I hope you get answers for Trixie (and you) soon. I will say it took Murray longer to "bounce back" from the biopsy than the internist told us, but he is a senior dog.

Take care,
Bonnie

Hi Tricia. Duck had a bone marrow biopsy in the initial stages of diagnosis of this disease. It turned out to be a good thing because he has Pure Red Cell Aplasia (which is AIHA right at the marrow level). He was put on the same meds as Murray and has responded very well.

At the time I was worried about him having the procedure because he needed to be anaethesized (sp?) and I was told it could be a bit painful. He came through it just fine though.

Hope you get good news and that they can get the results to you soon. Please keep us posted.
