Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - transfer factor and pumpkin (again)

Hi Brigette & Kahlu

So pleased the pumpkin worked - don't know how anyone found this 'cure' for upset tummy's but thank goodness they did. Just been online and ordered another three cans!!

I have selected and printed your advice on supplemens and I am going to take them to my vet to see if it's ok for Pheebs to have them. Trouble is, you get into such a flap in case you aren't doing the right thing and you feel like you have to believe in your vet (although mine says she does not believe that vaccinations cause IAHA!!!) I have to go along with her advice as I am afraid not too!! Hope this makes sense. As in previous thread, would love to know if anyone has tried the Transfer Factor as it seems too good to be true - (again my vet says it may stimulate her immune system but not according to the website!!) All this conflicting advice. I think that this is the best website to look for information, so pleased I stumbled across it.

Also, does anyone give their furry friends milk thistle - if so can you let me know dosage and whether in liquid or tablet form?

Best wishes to all

Gill and Phoebe xx

My vet does not recommend vaccinations for our dog at this time. To be on the safe side I wouldn't feel comfortable giving them until they are really out of the woods and then I would still question whether vaccinations are safe for a dog who has or had AIHA?

Gill,
I am glad the pumpkin works for you, too bad it is so hard to find in GB. Just make sure it is plain pumpkin and NOT the pie filling. I think it is the fiber, that helps with the diarrhea. If you don't have any pumpkin on hand, try mashed up cooked carrots and zucchini or any other squash. I tink that could work too.

As for the cyclosporin, I have no experience with that. Maybe somebody else could chime in. All I know, it is very expensive and has to be dosed very precisely.

Transfer Factor is something I have never heard about. What I don't understand about it is, that it is supposed to boost the immune system? That is exactly what you DON'T want. The immune system has to be suppressed. Maybe you misunderstood? Maybe I misunderstood?

We have used milk thistle pretty well from the start of Kahlu's illness. It helps support the liver. He first got capsules (for humans) of 250mg that I opened and put half of a capsule in his food. Now he is on a liquid formula and gets 2x 1.2 ml per day. I don't think you can over dose on milk thistle. I also believe the liquid is better absorbed.

Of course you have to listen to your vet, but you can always question her! Maybe it has been too long ago that Phoebe was immunized and the vet feels that it did not affect her because of that time gap. If she does not think that immunizations can cause IMHA she needs to do some serious reading! At this point you don't have to make a decision on whether you want to immunize Phoebe. Together with my vet, I have already come to the conclusion, Kahlu will never be immunized again. For most diseases blood tests, to test for immunity, so called titers can be done.
Best wishes to you and Phoebe,

Hi Gill,

So glad Pheebs is making progress and pumpkin worked, it's a simple godsend!

I have heard of many dogs, both IMHA and healthy, taking milk thistle. We haven't tried it, but I know many here use it.

We just had our vet write a letter to the County, and thank GOD they accepted it, and we no longer have to worry about vaccines- tiggs won't ever get them, and I'm so relieved that the county won't press the issue.

hugs to phoebe!

I inquired about Transfer Factor two years ago when my dog was diagnosed. Instead of ordering Transfer Factor, which would have taken a while to be shipped to me, I purchased a similar Transfer Factor product containig bovine colostrum at a local health food store. I also purchased Milk Thistle. After giving the colostrum and Milk Thistle to my dog for two days, his condition seemed to improve; however, he died two days later from a blood clot. I can't say for sure whether the colostrum and/or Milk Thistle helped, but they didn't make his condition any worse.
