Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Toxic pet products

Interesting reading. Really happy more stories are reporting on this.

Thanks, Penny. Important data. Only problem is the average person doesn't read this info., the media outlets are not picking it up and making an issue to share with the public and the veterinary community is still hawking a lot of these toxic pet products as effective and safe while the EPA continues to sit on their hands, even after issuing a 'bulletin,' (which means nothing if they refuse to take action) So, we're in a quandry and pets continue to get sick and die due to disgracefully poor regulatory procesess.

I actually lifted this site from an article. I should have posted the entire link. Also read another article a week ago about the same concerns. These were in the news section on Yahoo so hopefully they reached a number of people. Here is the link from the article

It is a small step but it does seem that more and more people are coming to the same conclusions.

Here is the other article I was reading last week. In about the 10th paragraph it is mentioned about the awareness of the dangers of over vaccinating our pets.

Haven't been here in a long time. Bottom line - I believe that the one and only frontline application I used was what put my Chip over the bridge - literally. We had battled AIHA for over a year, as well as the Diabetes which was brought on by the Prednisone when a severe case of fleas - our only experience with that as well - led me to the frontline application that I will regret forever. I came back to the board primarily to look at frontline experiences as I have a new dog, a beautiful Pharaoh Hound rescue named Izzy and was contemplating this product again at the urgence of my vet - this time primarily for ticks. You may find that crazy but I also wonder whether Chip's size and compromised system played a role. Chip's AIHA was brought on initially by his rabies vaccine and Chip was a miniature pinscher. I did come home from the vet with some frontline BUT... scared. We have pulled so many ticks from Izzy already though?

Sherri...you are taking a VERY BIG RISK. Frontline's main ingredient is fipronil, a strong pesticide. This chemical has not been properly tested to show safety in use. Merial refuses to release clinical study trial information. They refuse to provide numbers of advere reaction reports. They actually refuse to provide any but the most basic information.
They practice deceptive advertizing stating that the fipronil does not penetrate the sebaceous glands. They will provide the consumer with no proof the product is safe. And, interestingly, over the years apparently they were not REQUIRED to reveal proof. Very convenient for them.
My boy developed severe AIHA two days following a second dosage (within 6 weeks) of Frontline. I was moving to a new house with a backyard area that had many trees and bushes. I was trying to protect him from fleas and ticks. Instead, I almost killed him.
And, supporting enormous guilt and anger, I vowed to spread the word when ever I could to other pet owners and tell them my boy's experience (and many other pet owners experience). Fipronil is poison, there is no doubt. Return it and get your money back. Try googling natural pet sites and try products that are homeopathic in nature and do not advertize pesticide/commercial chemical ingredients. Best wishes, Jan

Any info you can point me to regarding fipronil would be most appreciated. We have had 2 "mysterious" bouts with our 14-lb sheltie mix over the last 7 months. First was diagnosed as peripheral vestibular syndrome. This 2nd bout, tho totally different, is being diagnosed as another form of same.

Each bout has, curiously, followed exactly 3 months' dosage of fipronil. Symptoms are neurological in nature.

Internet research, thus far, seems to confirm my fears that fipronil is the culprit. Research led me to this post. Sounds as if you've all had some experience with this tick preventative. If you can point me in the direction of additional research sites for fipronil, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks so much! Sharon

Sharon...go to the following site: www.biospotvictims.org and click on 'articles.' You will find numerous collections by the webmaster in areas of toxicity of various flea control products, including information on fipronl.
Fipronil is a pesticide that is the main ingredient of Frontline. There is much research that reveals the danger of this chemical to both pets and people.

Several months before his diagnosis of AIHA, my dog developed a large benign hair follicle tumor that was surgically removed. Interesting where the tumor was -- between the shoulder blades, right where we had been applying monthly application of Frontline. Could all be coincidental, but I won't be using it anymore.
