Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - To Tricia -- UK

I thought it interesting that there appeared to be something with your dog's foot. The vet searched for something wrong with Molson's back foot -- nothing found. I wonder if that is a common symptom or display of IMHA.

I was trying to find the origination of this post as I can definitely add that Chip had a strange event with his back foot --- it was like one of his pads were missing --- we applied antibiotics and it just resolved.

Hi Maureen.
Trixie came down with AIHA last October. I first noticed she wasn't very well when one morning she came upstairs to me, I was getting ready for work, I heard her on the top stair. When I looked, she had her 2 front paws on the top stair, her head was down and it seemed she was trying to catch her breath. When I called her in to my room, she was a little wobbley on her feet. Up until then she seemed fine, normal eating habits etc and still active. I took her to the Vets. Whilst I was there I also mentioned about her front paw, it seems the base of the nail was torn. He gave her antibiotics and said they should help with her paw and might help with whatever had happened to her that morning. I was asked to keep an eye on her and take her back after 4-5 days. The decided to do a blood test and thats when I was told her had AIHA. Basically that was it, the course of medication was started, one of which had an adverse effect on her. As of today she is climbing back slowly after having a blood transfusion and Bone Marrow biopsy, in January.
From what I have read here on this forum, the start of AIHA seems to be different for each of our furry pets.

Hi Ann Marie, just saw your post here.
Trixie front paw, near the base of the nail had looked a little swollen for about a week or so, this was last September. I bathed it each day and kept a close eye on it. It didn't seem to bother her and I never saw her licking it or anything. The morning Trixie seemed to have breathing problems and was a little wobbley on her feet, I took her to the vets about my concern at the same time I mentioned her front paw. The vet suggested she went on antibiotics with hopes that whatever had caused her to be breathless might be helped with the antibiotics, also they would help if she had any infection in her paw. It seems there was a slight tear at the base of her nail.

Matilda's had problems on and off with her paws for the last 2 years - and she was just diagnosed 1 month ago. It was like the pad of her feet - mostly the front feet - would get infected. I noticed when I brought her to the Critical Care unit that one nail bed seemed swollen and cracked. I pointed it out to them, but with the other symptoms that seemed very minor at the time. Wonder what the connection is? (and to update, Matilda's last blood work showed everything in normal ranges - and pcv of 47!!!)

This website hosted by Lowchens of Australia has the most complete guide to all things paws and nails I have ever found. http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/grooming/nailconditions.htm

Giant Schnauzers are very prone to a serious cancer of the toe nail bed. Most Giant owners pinch the base of the toenails once a month looking for swelling and any pain reaction. In most cases, after a biopsy, it is found to be a very aggressive cancer and the toe is amputated immediately. We learned from those owners whose vets treated it as an infection because while they were giving antibiotics the cancer moved quickly to the lungs. Many Giants are alive today, albeit minus a few toes, due to these experiences. Our dogs can live quite well minus a few toes.
