Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - to barbara in GA

Barbara, GA
Linda,
I agree with Debbie and would email Dr. Dodds. We lost our Jack Russell last July to AIHA which I believe was brought on by the administration of flea/tick prevention. We are looking into getting another dog now, so I asked her what she recommended we use since we live in GA. She emailed me late that night. She obviously is quite generous with her time and would be willing to give you her input.

I am so glad that Holly is doing so well. I have watched her progress since last June. Keep it up!

(p.s. for those interested, Dr. Dodds recommended Interceptor every 45 days for heartworm, Advantix for flea/tick if you do not have cats and Frontline if you do...I am still concerned about this as Advantix is what we used on Skip 3 days prior to his AIHA diagnosis)

Barbara, I am very suprised to hear Dr. Dodds recommending commerical flea and tick preventives.
She had advised me to NOT even administer a wormer, not pesticide based, called Drontal to my dogs. My Choe was also 'poisoned' (that's exactly what it is) from Frontline and like your Skip, three days following topical administratin became seriously ill. $9,000, four transfusions and twenty months later my bot is is still (thank the lord) with me and finally recovering. It was a very slow and painfully disturbing road.
In this flea season period please be very careful of all products with pesticide ingredients. DO NOT USE THEM. THEY CAN SERIOUSLY HARM YOUR PET. Take heed from others' example. Barbara, I would re-contact Dr. Dodds to make sure she is indeed recommending these products. thanks. Jan

Jan,
I was very surprised at the response I received too. Here is the email that was sent to me:

Dear Barbara: So sorry about your loss ! For heartwom prevention we recommend Interceptor every 45 days [be sure to mark your calendar -- French studies have confirmed efficacy for 45 days] . For fleas and ticks we use Advantix -- if you don't have cats or Frontline [not Frontline Plus] if you do. Best wishes. Jean

Obviously, it is quite different than the advice you got. It would be interesting to email her again and see if the same advice would be given!

Hi Barbara:
Here is Dr. Dodds response below when I asked her about using a antihelmetic, Drontal, for getting rid of tapeworms The wormer is not a pesticide, but I was still concerned about adverse reactions. Ended up that I used another alopathic treatment rxed by vet called Panacur which I researched did not have as many reported potetial adverse reactions as drontal. I wanted to use homeopathic, but after ordering a Chinese herbal treatment from a well known herbalist and trying same on both dogs for about 4 weeks as well as Dr. Pitcarin's recommendation of crushed pumpkin seeds, wheat germ oil and papaya enzymes, but the tapes (revealed in the dogs stools) were still present...and what made matters even worse, I was also effected, as tapeworms can and apparently do transmit to humans. I visited doc and got rxed treatment similar to drontal myself!
Unbelievable and VERY upsetting.
After receiving this note from Dr. D., I was very worried about using drontal, especially on Choe. Perhaps it would be a good idea to write and ask her about the e-mail she sent to you. I am really confused.
Like you said she seems to be very generous with her time and this is such an important topic (flea control) I am sure we would all like to be made aware of how she came to her conclusions especially in light of people like you and I who have been through so much heartache due to flea control (commercial) products.

Jan

Dear Jan: THANKS for your kind words. Absolutely NO Drontal for either dog. You can use Dr. Pitcairn's remedy, or even an ounce of buttermilk daily for 7 days. Think I'd use Dr. P's receipe first, as the other is what I was told once, but I've not seen any evidence that it works. Best wishes. Jean

Barbara and Jan,

I received the same message regarding flea/tick - heartworm medication as Barbara from Dr. D.
