Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Tipsi Update

Hello Again,

Tipsi was in for her second blood draw yesterday since being discharged from the hospital 3 weeks ago. And I'm very pleased with her results. Her PCV is now up to 31 and we hope it continues to increase. Her kidney levels have completely normalized which is such a relief considering the acute renal failure was so severe a few weeks ago. Her pancreatitis has completely resolved as well as her thrombocytopenia. And due to the resolution of the thrombocytopenia we no longer have to give her injections of heparin. The Dr. just wants us to continue to give her a daily aspirin. We will continue on with the prednisone and cyclosporin therapy, but depending on her PCV level at the next blood draw we may make a tiny decrease in the prednisone. But I am insisting the doctors be very cautious about this because I do not want Tipsi to have another relapse!! However, I also realize the side effects of the prednisone could be hard on Tipsi as well. Hopefully we will be able to find the right balance for her.
I am so thankful that my girl is fighting like she is and I hope we continue to keep this horrible disease under control!! To all of you out there who are in the first days or weeks of this disease, don't loose hope!! Keep on fighting. :)

that is great on both fronts (PCV/kidney)
what did they say caused the out of the blue renal failure?
reason why i ask is a month ago sways kidney levels were unbelievably messed up and they said she was possibly on her way to full renal failure within 6 months...
she gets retested tomorrow and im hoping they have normalized and it was something that randomly caused them to spike

Hi Josh,

Well there are 2 things that helped contribute to Tipsi's renal failure. One of them was a condition called DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation). Tipsi developed the DIC as a secondary complication due to the AIHA and DIC can cause multiple organ failure. Which is why her kidneys as well as pancreas began to fail. Fortunately the DIC was caught early enough to get under control and in reponse to that her internal organs began to recover. Another reason that her kidney function became compromised was because of her blood transfusion. Her body attacked the foreign red blood cells and the destruction or bursting of the cells released particles of bilirubin and other breakdown materials which her kidneys couldn't filter quick enough. It was a slow process to get her kidneys back to functioning normally. It has taken about 4 weeks. In the hospital she was put on aggresive fluid therapy and now at home we add water to her food to make sure she stays well hydrated. The doctors have said that since her kidneys were damaged during this whole ordeal that she will be more prone to chronic renal failure in the future.
Was this the first time that Sway's kidney levels were messed up?? How high was her Urea Nitrogen, creatinine, & phosphorus?
