Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Tips on cutting tablets plz!

Today I begin lowering Trixie's Prend. 3/4 morning, 1/2 evening. The 1/2 isn't too bad, but the 3/4!! how on earth do you cut them evenly? I did my first one this morning and it wasn't a neat cut, with tiny parts scattered around. I need to get the 3/4 as exact as I can. The half isn't a problem it's cutting the other half into 1/4.
Many thanks

HI
In Australia we can buy pill cutters from the chemist(pharmacy). You can usually do half and then half again. Im sure you would be able to get one in the UK.

HI Tricia,
I dont know what dose you are giving your pup, but Pred comes in different size tablets. So if you are giving 3/4 of 10mg, you could give a 5mg pill and cut one in half with pill cutter to make a 2.5mg pill, combined are 3/4. You could also check with a compounding pharmacy if that doesnt help and have them compound your dose into something small and easy to hide in hotdog or something.
Hope this helps,

I've actually found a sharp knife to be better than a pill cutter-I use a swiss army knife. Our internist actually gave me a demo on this too, and said that there would be wastage-but that it was more important to be exact. So for 3/4 a pill, I'd expect to lose that extra 1/4 to crumbs and mess. That said, for prendisone, you can get smaller amounts, I currently give 1/2 of a 2.5 mg tablet. I also fill Slinky's prescriptions at our regular pharmacy rather than the vet. Their hours are better :)

Many thanks for your replies. Trixie is on 25mg (per tablet)3/4 morning + 1/2 evening. I have no problem cutting the whole tablet in half with a knife, it's cutting the 1/2 into 1/4, it does tend to crumble. I'll pop into the Chemist this morning and get a pill cutter as I'm worried about not giving Trixie the exact amount (the 1/4) with it being rather crumblie.
