Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Timmy is home once again

Hello everyone,
Timmy is home once again after being hospitalized
again on saturday. He had labored breathing and i was almost sure
it was fluid somewhere so off to the weekend emergency
hospital we went.....The x-ray showed Pulmonary Hypertension which is high blood pressure in the lungs. In this case it was 2 veins that supply's the one lung
was 3 times the normal size which means the heart really
has to pump hard against the pressure in that lung to
get blood into it.The vet said this is common when you have extra fluid such as the transfusion.Oxygen tank and
lasix and an overnight stay brought him back home. His repirations are a little rapid but if we hang out near the air conditioner he calms right down.He is eating really good and drinking. He is really weak after
that episode.Pcv was 35 this morning. We go to his normal vet tomarrow for a pcv and i want to make sure the Pulmonary Hypertension situation is checked a little further. Were hangin in there.
Thanks for all the support everyone. You are the GREATEST! Timmy gives you all a HIGH PAW!!

Terry,
I am so glad you got your boy back home! I really did not expect that to happen so soon with the pulmonary hypertension. I am sure Timmy is happy to be home too. This is also clearly the best situation for your wallet!
Remember his body has and still is going through a lot, so it is normal for him to be exhausted. Great that he is eating and drinking. Being on prednisone, he will need lots of water and he will pee lots too. For food, try to be as low fat as possible. Dr. Dodds also recommends no grain.

Best wishes and good luck tomorrow,

Dear Terry,

That's fantastic news! Well done little Timmy!

Keep us posted on his progress, but hopefully he's over the worst of it and the PCV holds.

High paw back to Timmy from Millie!

Well done on getting Timmy home - I'm sure for all our furbabies this is the best place for them to recover from bad 'episodes'. With all the love and attention you will lavish on him I'm sure he will progress just fine, slowly, but fine!

Keep us posted

God Bless

Terry,
Hopefully the hypertension can be addressed. 35 is a real positive. Don't we all wish we could hang by the AC right now. Glad your boy is home with you.

Hello Everyone...
Today Timmy's pcv is 32 so we are 3 points down today.
He hasn't pooped in two days and he isn't interested in food today...I think he might be constipated.i called the vet but he is on vacation so I called another vet they told me to call the local pharmacy and ask for
a infant enima that is phosferious free...No such luck
nobody has any.........I guess he will have to wait until tomarrow and see if a local vet has something..

Terry,
mix some canned pumpkin not pie filling, just plain pumpkin in with his food. it has a very high fiber content, tastes good and is good for diarrhea and constipation. for a small guy like Timmy, I would probably use about a teaspoon. If it does not help, it certainly does not hurt.
Best wishes,

Hi Terry, good to hear Timmy is home with you. As far as the conctipation goes you could always try prunes. I've never tried them but I was told they work pretty darn good for constipation. You could also try a teaspoon of pumpkin. I use pumpkin to help firm up Tessy's poop but I've heard that it is also good to help prevent constipation.

Don't worry too much about a 3 point drop. A number of factors can influence a pcv....time of day, how the blood was drawn, dehydration, etc. Keep a good eye on him. If you feel things are getting worse then get him to a vet for a check. The price of a PCV can really help to put the mind to ease.

Have you been working on his diet as of late? Have you checked out Dr. Dodds' liver cleansing diet?

Rapid breathing! Boy do I remember that! Tessy used to breath so fast and hard I thought she'ld blow the house down. She was like the big bad wolf huffing and puffing. This will get better once her HGB rises. The body is working double time to get oxygen pumping around the body....plus the heat probably doesn't help none. Is she drinking lots of water and peeing normally?

Keep us posted. I'll keep Timmy in my thoughts and prayers.

I was glad to hear that Timmy had a good meal. Funny how we find joy in little victories like eating and pooping.
When my Ren was so sick, we actually cried when she was finally able to poop...we laugh at it now but it was terrible when she was ill.
