Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Tick & Flea Prevention > IMHA

Hi all,
What is your advice on flea/tick (also heartworm) medication after IMHA? I'm so worried about anything now!
Thanks,

So are we. We have decided that we can't use fipronil any longer, so we did a lot of reading about other possibilities.

I think we have settled on rose geranium essential oil, probably mixed with lavender essential oil in an almond oil base, applied each time before the dogs go out, coupled with checking them each time they come in.

We haven't tried it yet.

Hi Terese,

I posted this elsewhere yesterday, but CSU suggested to us that we use Intercepter (NOT Heartgard) every 45 days, and our own vet added that it could be split into an am/pm dose to monitor for any reaction.

But, I've also heard that Dr. Dodds recommends a daily, year round preventative, hopefully someone else can elaborate on that, or will know what it's called.

Melissa,
Dr. Dodds knows of a European study that showed efficacy of Interceptor at a 45 day dosing schedule and advised us to use that with Chance when he was ill. He had no ill effects and we continue to dose like this for both dogs. This gives no wiggle room if the owner "forgets" a scheduled dose.

I had a dog die from heartworm in the mid 70's before it was really known about and there were no preventatives. It was a very sad condition and we didn't know what was wrong until after her death when the vet suggested to my father that he knew of this new disease showing up more in our area and this was the likely cause of the illness.

I am very grateful we now have a simple preventative to this disease. Treatment of heartworm basically uses the same medication but in very high doses. The dog is restricted to a crate while the heartworms break up into the bloodstream. Not something I would want my dogs to go through. Three summers ago a dog just down the street had to be treated for heartworm disease, so I know it is in my area.
