Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Tick and heartworm

With the recent thread on fleas, I am curious as to what you do to control ticks. I am not concerned with fleas because in the 8 years that we have lived in our current house we have never had a problem with fleas. However about 2 months out of the year we do get ticks pretty bad (we have 3 acres), so since so many of you recommend not using Frontline, then what do you recommend?
Also, what do you use as a heartworm preventative?

Thanks! Wendi

Hi Wendi,

We follow the protocol that has been gaining wider acceptance: interceptor ever 45 days. For Tiggs, I cut it in half and give half in am, half in the pm and monitor him for any reaction.

Hope that helps.

I was at work and in the course of the day I was covered with fleas. I immediately threw all of my clothes in the washing machine and showered.
To no avail, we ended up with fleas on our two girls. The youngest was just spayed and is doing well. Does anyone have experience with Frontline? God, I hate using anything like this, but this has to be controlled.
We lost a 4 yr.8 mo old girl in 2003 to AIHA and we are very wary of anything that we treat them with. This is especially true of vaccinations (no gang shots, one at a time and spaced a couple of months apart.)
Any information would be appreciated.

Wendi, we have the same, 5 acres, lots of dear no fleas and 3-4 months of ticks. I use the preventic collar its last for 3 months, I keep it on for 4, seems to still work.

As for heartworm, Wylie used to be on Heartgard Plus, but we think that caused her relapse so we swtiched to Interceptor and like Tiggs, she gets half am, half pm. It worried me because she gained weight, 56# so she is on the 50-100# dosage, has been on this since March and so far no problem.

Thanks Melissa and Laurie. We have always used Heartgard Plus, so I will have to check into the Interceptor...I thought Interceptor had more "stuff" in it so I will re-eval that!

Laurie, do you know the name of the tick collar you use, that might be a good alternative for us!

Wendi, The name is Preventic for the collar. I always thought Interceptor had more stuff, but it doesn't it only has heartworm, and supposedly that ingredient is better than the heartgard one.

I asked about this in Nov when we thought the heartgard Plus was Wylies trigger.

There are some botanical flea collars out there for dogs and cats as well as natural spot on treatments. I use one of the natural spot on botanicals on my outside cat. We live on a 35-acre farm and she loves to prowl. So far, I haven't found a single flea or tick on her.

I use a flea comb on Darcy, who stays inside but does like to go outside and roll around in the grass and bask in the sun. I use the Liquid Net flea/tick/mosquito spray on her, but it's something you have to do daily. Also have used Burts Bees, which is safe for pets and humans. Both products are all natural and safe and I even use them on myself, too. Also use the Aubrey Organic Shampoo on Darcy. It repels fleas and ticks. It has Pennyroyal, fennel, and other herbs in it. It works for us. I will never put chemicals on my pets again.

Thanks Laurie and Karen for the information I will look into both of those products.

I am a bit worried about the heartgard I have used in the past, I did lots of reading after interceptor was mentioned. I do see that Interceptor seems safer in certain breeds, especially collies. I think Calypso may be a collie mix so I think it is important for me to switch to the interceptor so I will talk to my vet next week, I know she carries both types of heartworm medication. In the mean time I plan on sending Calypso's picture to a few rescue people I know to see if they think she is a collie mix.

Thanks for the replies, Wendi
