Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Thyroid & Fleas

Patrice & other veterans:

Layla is doing well thank God, off pred.
2 questions:

1) Been on Solxione for thyroid (.5 mg two times a day- I dropped it to ½ that) vet says she may be on it for life, what do you think?
2) Fleas - I used all natural “De Flea” shampoo twice & still have problems. “Vet” said “Advantics” would be ok to use, but I am very leery of any spot on treatment, esp. since she is doing so well & flea season is almost over in our region, am trying deluded “Skin So Soft” after reading some posts. Please advise

Hi there, I am certainly no veteran, and looking for answers myself as I had given my dogs a treatment with Revolution only the Monday before the Thursday when Riley suddenly had a bleed, low platelets, and then anaemie after a much larger bleed.

Its a month now and the time I would give another dose to both my dogs, but am very reluctant to do this - if ever. Im searching for things to use and I did find this:

2 drops of lavender oil, 1 drop of pennyroyal oil, 2 drops of eucalyptus oil, 25 mls of almond oil. Mix well.

Take a cloth collar, every 1cm around the collar, add 2 to 4 drops of this recipe, put the collar in a plastic bag and let the oils diffuse through the collar. Let it sit for 24 hours then place around the pet's neck. When the oils no longer smell, rejuvenate as above.

A cloth collar can be made by binding padding over an old leather collar, or plaiting thick cotton and weaving a collar.

Skin-So-Soft is actually marketed here as an insect repellent in a spray bottle.

Ask Dr. Dodds how often she wants you to have the T4 and Free T4 tested. Usually you must be on soloxine for a minimum of 3-4 weeks to do this, or if there is a change in the dosage. She will determine at that time what dosage it should be at and whether this is a permanent treatment. I just got my report back yesterday on Chance.

I had a very smart breeder when we got Chance. She always advised people to treat the environment around the house first and not expect to eliminate fleas by treating the dog only. This is a significant undertaking. We have never had a problem at our house, I treat the yard with beneficial nematodes every year and this eliminates them outside. I get mine from Garden's Alive and this year they have added a new nematode that is directed at fleas. Well worth the money.

Skin so soft is an urban legend (see snopes.com) and does nothing to eliminate fleas or repel mosquitos or ticks. If you believe this I have a bridge to sell you.

We just rescued a Giant Schnauzer that was infested with fleas and banned to a back porch. The poor girl looked horrible with her flea allergy. She was vetted and shaved to the skin, treated and now a few weeks later looks like a million bucks and went to her new home yesterday sporting a brand new black coat.

When we travel for more than a few days, I buy insect "bombs" and set them off in the house before we get in the car. This is sufficient to clear the house of anything. If you do this make sure you are very careful to turn off any gas pilot lights. Remove everything on the kitchen counters and clean them carefully before doing anything with food. Follow the instructions carefully.

We have always used Frontline Top Spot safely for tick control, it also works with fleas. We do not use Frontline Plus because it contains an Insect Growth Regulator for fleas. These are not as safe. If you use any product ask about IGR's and avoid them. These are the ingredients that have drawn the attention of the government. I suspect that they will be either banned or highly restricted in the future.

Simple cleaning in your house on a daily basis will help significantly. Ask your vet for a flea collar and *safely* put this in your vacuum cleaner bag so when you vacuum, you will eliminate them this way.

Patrice, you are amazing! I like the flea collar in the vacuum cleaner idea. Thank you
