Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Tessy Update

This will be the third time I've tried to post on here so here goes.

Tessy had a check up last Monday evening and the good news is that her PCV rose from 19.6 to 23. Her WBC went down from 58.5 to 56 and her platelets are at 550. I'm not too sure what the WBC and platelet numbers mean but I think they said that they might be a little too high.

Today is Thursday and Tessy is feeling even better than in previous days. I bought her a new toy and now all she wants to do is play all day!

she doesn't go in for another check until this Monday so I'll keep everyone updated as they become available.

Thanks again to everyone for their support and prayers in these tough times. They are greatly appreciated.

Jonathan,
I was wondering the last few days, how Tessy is doing. These are great news!!! As far as I know it is quite common in this disease for the WBC to be high. They should go down as she progresses. Kahlu will have a blood test on Saturday, so keep your fingers crossed for us.
Best wishes, Brigitte and Kahlu

We are happy to hear your good news! Lucy's results were the opposite - her platelet count was low and her WBC count was high. This is a very frustrating disease to try to understand as it seems each dog has different individual results. But it is good to see encouraging posts and know that there is hope!

Jonathon,
Excellent news. Depending on the lab or equipment that was used, the platelets are somewhere about in the middle at 550,000. Purdue University Teaching Hospital reference range for dogs is 200,000-900,000/µ to give you a reference. This is the blood element that provides clotting, for instance if you cut your skin.

I am not sure what reference range your lab is using for the WBC. Some labs us a reference range of around 2,000 to 10,000 per microliter while some I have seen are more like 4,000 to 15,000 or even 6,000 to 15,500. If your WBC is 56,000, that would be high as compared to these references. Check your copy of the cbc to see what the reference range is. If you don't have a copy, ask for one of each test that has been done.
