Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Tessy had a Blood Transfusion...

I was wondering if someone could answer this question for me....Tessy had a blood transfusion last night/today and I read about dogs whose bodies reject the transfusion. Tessies PCV after the transfusion was 21 and she seems to be OK so far. I was just wondering if it is considered that her body had accepted the transfusion or if the body could still reject it. What are the timelines for this?
Thanks again for any help out there,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

My Millie also had a transfusion, her PCV was 14 before hand, then jumped to 25 afterwards.
She held at this for 2 and a 1/2 weeks then jumped to 33 then to 37.

As I understand, dogs effectively get their first transfusion for 'free' - they don't have to be cross-matched with a compatible donor.

I would say she would be fine.

The transfusion should last her around 5 days to a week. That's what the vet told me with Millie.
By the time the transfusion has 'run out', the meds should have kicked in, and the red cell destruction should be coming under control.

Hope this helps....

Good luck,

Samantha and Millie.

Hi Jonathan,

Tiggs' transfusion immediately boosted his PCV, thought unfortunately, it did continue to drop for almost a week afterwards. It got close to the point of needing a second, but miraculously, the meds began to kick in. It is not abnormal however for the numbers to fluctuate up and down immediately following the transfusion. If they do go down, try not to panic. Pred can take up to a week to work, Aza can take several weeks. If you can avoid a second transfusion, that is ideal, because the odds for a reaction do go up if another transfusion is necessary. However, there are several dogs on the board, and on Joanne's site that recovered just fine after several transfusions. Each case is a little different, but just try to take it one day at a time and stay hopeful.

all our best to Tessy and your family!
