HI there, Wow, it's been a long time since i posted. Panicking right now, Tess is back in the ICU, CV of 16 and platelets are at 19!!!! She is having a transfusion as I type. I almost forgot the feeling of helplessness that comes with this. Fingers crossed everyone! Claudine

Claudine, Oh dear. I am sorry to hear this. Has your vet checked Tess for tick diseases? Specifically babeseosis? These symptoms can be indicative of this. This is treated with imazol, and can be very successful. Patrice

Claudine, I am so sorry to read about Tess being back in the hospital. Did they ever figure out what her gastric upset was about? I know it has been about 4 years since her Evans diagnosis was she completely off meds? I am keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers. Penny

Hello everyone, thank you for your words of encouragement. As you can all sympatize, we are waiting for the morning phone call. Patrice, they are testing for tick diseases and should know in a few hours, along with the Coombs test results. To have a priary cause would be great as they could treat that. Penny, her gastric upset ended up being allergies, she basically on top of everything else has celiac disease. Tess was completely drug free for 3/5 months in 2006 prior to her first minor relapse of ITP (at the time there was no overt bleeding nor was she ever hospitalized). Since then she has been on a maintenance does EOD of Imuran.

Sending good thoughts to you and Tess. I pray you see a great improvement in her blood count after the transfusion.

Hello Everyone, Well Tess is still hanging in there. Her PCV went up to 32 after the transfusion last night but back down to 21 this afternoon. Platelets down to 16. The good news is there is regeneration showing so we are hoping that the Anermia is secondary to the blood loss from the ITP relapse. The ultrasound shows tons of fluid in her gastro and intestinal systems. Tick test also came back negative. If she drops to 15 they will trasnfuse again and begin the cyclosporin. Hoping for better news in the AM. She did stand up to say hello when we visited. Claudine

Did/have your vets considered vincristine for the platelets? Worked wonderful for Sierra when she was down to about 16K platelets back when her journey with this started. Adding our hopes to yours that there is better news in the morning.

Hi Rhonda, We have been discussing the vincristine treatment but the last time in 2004 when she had her onset, the vincristine had a terrible reation. Her platelets jumped to over 900 and her white blood cells disappeared and she became septic and infected and almost didn't pull through that. We are hesitant to use the vincristine because of the previous reaction. Hoping for better news today. Claudine

Ooohhh ... I can definitely see why you would be hesistant to try it again. Sierra's platelets went up to the 700s for a few weeks, but she didn't lose the white blood cells. Continuing good thoughts/prayers for Tess.

Good news! Tess' PCV count jumped 10 points today from 19 to 29. Her platelets are also up from 16 to 29 and no more evident bleeding on the ultrasound or visible melena. If she holds steady overnight, she comes home tomorrow!!! There is concern over her pancreas so we may look at changing her ongoing maintenance meds away from Imuran. Thanks for all the prayers and let's hope things stay in the upswing overnight!!! Claudine

Good morning everyone. Tess cam ehome from the ICU on Saturday and went in for her check-up this morning. Her PCV is up to 37 - GO TESS! However, teh abdominal ultrasound shows the formation (since Friday) of a blood clot in one of her veins. It is not obstructing the flow but is quite long (3cm they said). They put a rush on the platelet count and sent us home with liquid Aspirin to administer if the counts are too high. One extreme to another with my little one! Claudine

Claudine, That's great news about Tess' PCV count! I pray it goes even higher and holds firm. What made them do an ultrasound on Tess? Were there signs that alerted them that there might be a blood clot? Darcy had a transfusion last Wednesday and I questioned the vet about possible blood clot formation and the only thing she told me was that they wanted to keep Darcy for a few hours observation after the transfusion to rule out that very thing. I take her back tomorrow for a recheck and am praying that her levels haven't gone down. At least your vet is aware of Tess' clot and you have the liquid aspirin just in case. Hope all goes well with you and your little girl.
