Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - TC up the pred

I am sorry to report TC's Count is down and we have upped his pred. He was 42(I thought) but actually 34, the front desk tech at my reg vet got his numbers wrong a week ago. On Friday he was 27. The Specialist Vet said he is not making new cells yet and this is probably a drop from the cells wearing off his last transfusion.
We have upped the pred to 40 2x a day. I really hate this disease, I hate to see him panting. He will be going back on Tuesday for a recheck. He recovered much faster last time, this is heartbreaking.
He has gained so much weight I am worried about his heart.
I am feeding him 4x a day, he is always hungry. I read that some of you are mixing green beans with their food?

TC is on med for his diarrhea and I am giving him a tablespoon of pumpkin a day. He is eating Merricks's organic canned food and a small amount of Merricks dry.

Any info on how much green bean's and pumpkin to give is appreciated. TC is 85lb.

Hello Wendy,
So sorry to hear of the mix up... you must be disappointed.

Jasper thinks of food from the moment he gets up until he goes to bed.

He has bran for breakfast and weetabix (not sure what you call it over there)
His normal meal, (commercial dry food or kibble) or what he would have had before aiha is then divided into 2 meals, lunch and dinner. We add in mixed vegetables, eg... green beans, sprouts, peas, carrots, sweetcorn...even broad beans and then wholegrain or brown rice as is it is low GI and sustains him for longer. I have read an article somewhere recently that white rice can cause fatty lumps in your liver, hence the change to wholemeal.

The veg and rice is low in fat and fills him up without extra calories. I cook enough up for a couple of days and keep it in the fridge.

For a change he sometimes has pasta, but that has more calories in it!!!!!!!!!

Good luck,

Jackie and Jasper

Thanks Jackie, good idea about the brown rice sustaining him longer. May help with the loose stools also. He is taking a med for the loose stools and I am giving him pumpkin but they are still runny.

My vet did not want to give him more of the med to coat his stomach, she said just to use the peptid as the other drug(starts with an S) could prevent other meds being absorbed.

low fat/salt cottage cheese and hard boil eggs, egg noodles, small bits of baked turkey/chicken are also fillers with beging stomach reactions. I also use Merrick and find the food one of the better on the markets. Beans of any sort are a bit rough on the stomach. I keep them down to a minimum. Also try digestive enzymes (childrens') You can purchase in any health store. Hope that TC will be improving soon. Jan

Hi Wendy,
I've started giving Boy a low-cal lunch of half an apple peeled and chopped small, a handful of either cooked broccoli or green beans (not chopped so small, as I want him to feel like he's had a proper meal!), a tiny portion of carb, either rice, mashed potato, a slice of my rye bread or quinoa, plus just enough protein to give the whole thing a flavour - fish, turkey, cottage cheese or a bit of whatever meaty dog food is open at the time.
He doesn't gobble it quite as much as a normal meal, but he does eat it - the pred appetite helps here. He does also like rice cakes as a snack sometimes.

The reason he has the strange carbs is because he gets colitis and anything with wheat in it seems to aggravate his gut.

Hope TC recovers soon.

Thank you all for your suggestions, it has been very helpful & TC is getting some new foods. He is so hungry he would eat almost anything, things he would not even consider before!
