Hello, I have not posted in a while as TC had "recovered" from his relaspe of IMHA in late Sept 2007. We have been seeing a specialist about 45 miles away for blood draws every 6-8 weeks and TC has been on 10mg of pred every third day for 4 months(He is an 85LB Shepard mix). His RBC in March was 47. We took him last week and his RBC has fallen to 41 and the Vet said his platlets are large and clumping indicating there is some destruction going on. To ward off a possible relaspe we upped the pred to 10 mg a day and are going back tomorrow for another count. TC will probaly have to be on medication for the rest of his life(he is 10 yrs young)and that's okay, he is happy and healthy, his liver functions are good( we are still giving him the milk thistle). I cannot stress enough though the value of finding a specialist and having monthly blood draws. We possibly could have averted his last relaspe if we had been having his monthly draws. This is a wonderful forum, such knowledge! I use orgin for my cats and TC and I was shocked to read about the salmon bones. I have not seen any in their food but know now to be aware of it. Best to all and your doggies...

Wendy, I am glad that you were able to catch this in time. Let's hope that this does the trick. I am especially pleased to hear that those liver functions are good! I second the routine blood draws! For those who are tight on budgets, a simple spun PCV, at around $8. done every two weeks is a great way to keep up on possible changes without the expense of a full CBC. Our vet's clinic has one of the techs do it so there is no office visit charge. Just the hazardous material fee. Talk to your clinic and see if they will provide this service to you while your dog is in recovery. Patrice

Thanks for your comments and support. Tc's RBC has dropped slightly (40)but his platlets have gone up, although still in the low range(103) We are increasing the pred to 30 mg a day and adding Imuran. TC has not been on Imuran before so this is a first. We will go one week on the Imuran every day and then eod after that. Recheck again next Monday. Vet wants to avoid a relaspe, she has 7 dogs in her clinic right now with IMHA, she said that is unusual, usually they have 3-4, quite an uptick lately. At his last relaspe the platlets went first, he had zero platlets when he had his first tranfusion and they came back very slowly. He seems the same, happy and has energy, eating more now that we have increased the pred and we just got his weight down! Will keep updating...best to all and our beloved dogs...
