Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Symptoms of kidney problems?

Matilda was diagnosed 5 weeks ago today. Her pcv was initially down to 11. She had one blood transfusion plus all the meds. She has consistently shown improvement with each weekly blood transfusion, and everything has been within mid-normal ranges for the past 2 weeks. I just noticed this weekend that her urine is starting to smell really strong - almost a fishy smell (I am giving her fish oil supplement, but this is something she has always had). Could it be that she is not drinking enough water? Or could this be a sign of kidney problems developing? I will be calling my vet, but wanted to ask those who have been through this what they thought.
[AND Thanks for all the support and I pray for each of your pups - this is such a hard disease, and leaves you feeling so frightened - almost paranoid sometimes. This forum is just wonderful in helping to deal with that!]

Whoops! I meant weekly Blood TEST not transfusion - Matilda has only had 1 blood transfusion and then weekly blood tests. Sorry for the confusion on that one.

Jeanne,
Could this be a urinary tract infection? There is a particular bacterial infection in human uti's that can cause that fishy or "beer hall" odor. Infections like this are a common side effect of high dose prednisone therapy. I would not jump directly to thinking about a kidney infection yet. But if it is a uti, and wasn't treated it could progress to a kidney infection as well.

A urine culture would be the way I would go if this were me. See if your vet can describe to you how to get a "clean catch" in a female dog. I am not experienced in this. But I keep a few sterile urine culture kits at home for human clean catch samples. It involves sanitizing wipes in one direction several times and catching the urine midstream. Doesn't sound easy with a moving target. ;-)

Jeanne,

A UTI was my first thought as well. UTI's are very common in dogs who have AIHA/IMHA and are on prednisone.
