Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Sweeney update

I'm pleased to say Sweeney is doing very well. Last Thursday his blood count was up to 28 and yesterday it had shot up to 38, he is very well in himself and is behaving like a puppy again. His pred has been cut to 4 (5mgs) tablets a day and he is still on 1 azathioprine. I changed his food to Denes complete tinned and kibble, and he is also having Denes greenleaf and all-in-one tablets a day, don't know if it was coincidence but there definitely seemed be a big improvement wih the change of food. Apart from looking a bit of a weird shape he is looking very well, so I'm just keeping everything crossed for continued good progress. It has been such a help being able to read other people experiences of this terrible illness and being able to find out so much about AIHA from this group, thanks

Hi Pam, Sounds like you have found a vet that has experience of IMHA? Whereabouts in Hants are you?

Pam and Sweeney,
I have a feeling Jasper and Sweeney were diagnosed at around the same time.(Aug 30th)

It is great to hear he is improving. Jasper has steadily improved over the last 7 weeks, mind you he has his off days when he is quite lazy and generally looks bored and disinteresred in life!!! The max dose of pred he has been on has been 20 mg daily, so his energy levels have always been reasonably good.

I have learnt to take nothing for granted and take each day as it comes.

Keep up the good work Sweeney.

Pam.....What is Denes greenleaf all in one?

Pam,

That is wonderful news about Sweeney! Sometimes you just never know what will help them recover faster and maybe the food did help.

In any event that is great news!

Hi Hilary, I live near Eastleigh. My vet Sarah hasn't had that much experience with AIHA, but if she doesn't know a lot about something she is very interested in finding out more, so she contacted some of her friends at the vets schools and looked up loads on the net. She was also more than happy to listen to anything I found out from groups and articles.
Jackie, Denes Greenleaf and All-in-one tablets are herbal supplements, their food also contains a lot of herbs

Thanks for that Pam...........Its good your vet is really interested in the disease. My vet practice has only treated a minimum amount of cases here in Pembs, but they have read up and take advice from the lab where his results are sent.

Ps....I know where you are in Hants as my brother used to live in Hedge End!!!!!! Small world

Keep up the good work Sweeney.
