Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Sway update, 10/18

sways RBC count was around 22% on saturday.
no regeneration but its still holding in the general area tho so thats very promising.
we WERE going thru transfusions on a weekly basis so the current holding pattern has really been a blessing.
as of today it has been 26 days since her last blood transfusion...

within the last 48 hours she's started to eat alot better as well.
shes getting a big mix of food thrown at her...
turkey, chicken, AD, hot dogs, yogurt.
its up and down, she is very picky.

you can tell that some of her strength is slowly returning...
its very subtle but she is now able to support herself when she walks down a decline, and for the most part she can turn without her legs buckling.
her walk is still rather slow, but its a revelation compared to where she was.

wishing yall the best-
josh california

Josh, I admit I was really confused when Choe's hct read in the 20's for 4 months post transfusion. I was also infomed he was regenerating on one result but then not regenerating via the following results but then suddenly he went up into the 30's following a reduction of pred, of all things. At the time the vet said sometimes too high of a dose for a lengthy period can keep them on a number that doesn't show movement until the dose is altered. This doesn't mean Choe has not had his share of ups and down over the past year...however just wanted to share that lack of 'regeneration' doesn't necessarily translate into the hct being on a continual decline.
We all, obviously wish you the best and wish we were closer to give Sway a hug, (which I am sure you are doing for all of us). Jan

yea, jan...
thats very interesting about the med drop and the level rise happening together out of the blue...

sways pred was reduced from 40mg daily all the way down to 10 mg every other day in a matter of the last 3 weeks...
i know it was a drastic dive but her levels have held on thru it and hopefully she will continue to gain strength from the switch.
we really believe that it is the durabolin that is doing most of the grunt work and i hope as well that just at random i will go in and see a rise in those levels...
it has been fluctuating between 20-25 since sept 22nd.
the durabolin was started a week before that.

Josh,

At least Sway is holding steady which is a real plus. She for sure is fighting hard to beat this which is good, she has the determination.

GO SWAY! Keep on fighting!

Josh,
Hang on to every little positive. I am glad that you are seeing her become more active and eating. You are such a good doggy dad.
Best to you and Sway.

Josh -- thanks for letting us know how Sway is doing. We don't meet each other on this forum, but, regardless, we all connect with each case affecting a dog and person. Glad to know that Sway continues to fight and you see encouraging signs. I'll keep both of you in my prayers.
