Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Sway - 10/31

sways new retic count was 7.24!!!
her pcv was still holding at 23% (+39 days since last transfusion) but it looks as if her bone marrow is FINNNNNNNNNNNALLY making new cells-
my goodness i hope so.

her new urinalysis also revealed that her protein leak was far less substancial and that kidney failure isnt of major concern anymore.
whewww/

one potential new scare,
im noticing a rather decent sized knot on her right chest...
she goes for her steroid shot today and ill be sure to ask the vet about it.
its rock hard and its hard to notice from the eye but when feeling it definately exists.
concerning me, i hope its nothing.

Josh,
You know how happy I am to hear Sway's recovery!

Don't worry too much about this lump. It can be one of two things: calcinois cutis or a fatty tumor (lipoma).

http://www.kateconnick.com/library/cushingsdisease.html
"hard, calcified lumps in the skin (calcinosis cutis)"

http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/lumps.html
"The Lipoma is one of the most commonly encountered lumps seen by veterinarians during a physical exam. These soft, rounded, non-painful masses, usually present just under the skin but occasionally arising from connective tissues deep between muscles, are generally benign. That is they stay in one place, do not invade surrounding tissues and do no metastasize to other areas of the body. They grow to a certain size and just sit there in the tissues and behave themselves. Most lipomas do not have to be removed."

Chance has a number of lipomas. They first started on his chest. They are easy to check. The vet uses a very fine needle and does a "fine needle biopsy." Puts it under a slide and looks to see if all the cells are fat cells. Most often benign and are not removed unless they interfer with walking etc. (because of size)

Chance also developed a number of calcinosis cutis areas on his body while on prednisone. Most of them are totally gone now that we are down to 5mg pred. One has stayed on his right thigh and I am hoping it will get smaller as time goes by.

Don't worry too much today, you can find out easily what it is.

Woo-Hoo for you and Sway! I agree with Patrice about the lump and I hope we are right. My dog Salome had the same thing you describe way prior to her diagnosis and it never seemed to affect her.

WHOOO HOO!!! That is fantastic news Josh! Glad to hear Sway's doing better. Try not to worry about the lump, Monster (my pit) had the same thing up in the chest area. It turned out to be fluid, caused by infection and cleared up by antibiotics.

GREAT JOB guys keep it up!

Patty -- I also wonder about Sue K and Drago. Sue hasn't posted here for a few weeks, and she didn't respond to my inquiry to her e-mail address. I wish she would let us know the situation since, either way, the support of people on this forum can help provide comfort.
