Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Sunny false emergency

I took Sunny in to the vet yesterday for his daily PCV test. The results were 8 and the vet said he needed an immediate transfusion. She said that she was amazed that Sunny could still stand and walk. I needed to take him to an emergency/specialist hospital about 1/2 hour away. They were ready for him when we got there.... they retested his PCV and it was actually 22? What a relief! The specialists examined him and did some more testing. They agree with the IMHA diagnosis and made some minor changes to his meds. We are on day 12 since the onset. When will he be out of the "crisis" state? Ever?

Leslie,
It sounds like you had a somewhat traumatic day. Hang in there.

Leslie, I feel sorry for you because you don't need false alarms like that and yet at the same time, I'm relieved that it was a mistake and that Sunny is at 22. Hang in there!

Leslie,

I know it seems like you'll never get out of the crisis stage. I felt that way too. My Boogie's PCV count was mostly in the teens for two months. Only time it would get in the 20's was after transfusions. She had four of them. Now since April 24th, her last transfusion, her count has been consistently in the low 40's. And she's feeling so much better. Almost back to her old self. So don't give up hope. You never know when things will turn around for Sunny. Good luck.
