Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Success Stories at Meisha's Hope

I am getting ready to start scheduling the Success Stories for the Success Stories page at the Meisha’s Hope AIHA/IMHA Web site:

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/successstories.htm

for the 2008-2009 season (a season is September through May). I am also getting ready to begin work on the September, 2008 AIHA/IMHA Success Story.

Before I do a lot more scheduling for the Success Stories page, I would like to extend an invitation to anyone on this forum whose dog has reached their one year AIHA/IMHA anniversary or is near that anniversary to consider sharing their dog’s story on the Success Stories page at the Meisha’s Hope Web site. If you are interested in having your dog featured on the Success Stories page at Meisha’s Hope, send me an email at:

jdickson@cloudnet.com

and I will in turn send you the questionnaire I use to collect data to write the Success Stories to get the process started. Each and every day I hear from people with newly diagnosed AIHA/IMHA dogs or those who are continuing to struggle with the disease who tell me how much HOPE and encouragement these stories have given them. If you would like to be part of this HOPE to others, you can do so by sharing your dog’s AIHA/IMHA Success Story at Meisha’s Hope.

Hugs to all the canines from my little canine red-headed gal and me.

Hi Joanne,

Well,we meet again. I made the choice to go through all of the success stories on your website today (instead of doing paperwork I should be doing for my job) to try to find any information I could to help Barkley. It is so frightening to keep watching his numbers go up and the down again, especially when he is already taking so many medications and has already had 3 transfusions. We are back down to a PCV of 13-14 and probably going to be back in the hospital with another blood transfusion (#4) on Monday. Because of a drop in his reticulocytes our vets took him off of his Azothioprine for one day but then other numbers came back and he started going off his food again and looking more lethargic and depressed. So back on a lower dose of Azothioprine and off of his Metronidazole, which he had been placed on for diarrhea...which never had cleared up but is now even looser! The Baby Wipes company will love us since he is a long haired dog...but clipping his rear to make it easier for me right now just feels like one more insult of this illness that I am not yet ready to do. Any other ideas about dealing with diarrhea?

I have been in the Success Stories since about 9 AM and it is almost 9 PM...but they have given me back some hope. Dealing with everyday responsibilities is both difficult and painful, since I am both his sole emotional and financial support...and they seem in direct opposition to each other since the first takes me away from him (to work) when the latter causes us to want ever so much to be together all of the time right now. If anyone out there has come up with any additional information about financial assistance for owners to help with veterinary expenses it would be deeply appreciated. And to those out there who might never otherwise realize the lives-both two-legged and four-legged-that they have touched by participating in these websites...it's the hope you offer with your words and wisdom to those of us in the midst of this battle for life that keeps us going. Thank you.

Cheryl

Since I hadn't heard from you for a few days I was indeed wondering how your dear Barkley was doing. Even though the PCV is back down, hang in there since many AIHA/IMHA dogs have had to have several transfusions to "buy time" until the meds started to work.

Please give Barkley another hug from Maddie and me and be assured you both remain in my thoughts and prayers.
