| Sophie my 7 yr old american cocker Dx. with evans disease May 2010. Huge side effects from pred. Kidneys failing and developed cushing sydrome along the way. 4 mths into this horrible disease which almost took her life. Here's her update for this week. Yesterday we had very good news. Sophie is holding her own now and consistently her blood work is staying in the normal range. We decreased her to 1.5 pred in the morning, She is still on her Benazpril 2.5mg twice a day, Omega 3 600mg twice a day, Milk Thistle 100 mg twice a day, and ASA. 4mg.once a day. Her weight is still 14.3 which is way to high for her but at least its not going up anymore. Her side effects are now so much less. It makes a huge difference to her body going to once a day instead of the twice a day. No more panting heavily and her breathing is so much more quieter from resp. of 50 to 70 a min. they are now down to 20 to 30 so that is a huge improvement. She is able to lie on our bed most of the night now, not all night but some of it. Still not my cuddly affectionate dog but its coming. She now brings her toy to greet you home with her tail a wagging. And her walks are up to 40 mins a day. which is about half way to what it used to be. It still tires her out completely. And I wont push her because I'm so afraid to tax her system. The very best news was when we dip sticked her urine Sunday morning, for the very first time it wasn't at the very highest level of 2000 or more. It was 100. I couldn't believe my eyes. The joy I felt was unbelievable and it gives me hope that PEI is right and said the kidneys will heal themselves once she is off the pred. yippy! I wonder if the Milk Thistle has helped with this. We started that about 2 weeks ago. I'm pinching myself as I write this because Ive been so worried about her kidneys. I hope and pray that this reading is true and cont's every week for her. Her PH is a little high which concerns me but I'm not sure what that means. We go back in 2 weeks to the vets, Sophie gets a break from being poked every week. We are very pleased and wanted to share this with all of you. I hope this give's you hope for your little ones too. Don't give up. Its painful to watch them suffer with this disease but they can make it with a lot of love and devotion. I hope and pray my Sophie does. Debbie and Sophie |
