| Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice from the group. Some of you know Tess and I. She was diagnosed with Evans in Dec.2004. She suffered a relapse of the ITP in 2006 and is currently in remission again. She is on a maintenance dose of 12.5mg Iruman EOD. Her blood levels are terrific and she is in amazing spirits. We are very lucky. So here is the thing, she has mottling, hair loss and small scabbing of the hair on her hind legs. (She did not have this until this summer after she was off the prednisone). She was diagnosed with bacterial folliculitis and has 28 days of antibiodics. Her skin cleared up completely and she even stopped shedding. Well, now 4 weeks post end of the antibiodic treatment the mottling is returning and spreading quickly. We spoke with her dermatologist and he is saying that "With her condition and the medications required to suppress her immune system, she is predisposed to secondary bacterial infections". "we can discuss some alternatives to dealing with the recurrent infections e.g. pulse antibiotic therapy, oral interferon to boost her local immune defense system while not affecting her circulating immune system" . HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THESE TREATMENTS AND THE RISK WITH AN IMHA/ITP DOG? Alternatively they want to refill the prescription. is anyone aware of any natural/holistic treatments we can try with Tess? Claudine |

| Hi Claudine I am not sure how useful this may be but here goes. Our specialists advocates using products for babies. So when Georgie had skin problems she suggested sudacrem which is a nappy rash cream. She also tried a special honey when Georgie had an ulcer on her leg. Not a great help to you but could lead to something. Steph |

Claudine (and everyone else): I've been out of town for work the last month or so, thus, no posts or even reading. However, Lola (who, btw is doing rather well) is about 11 months out of crisis developed sebhorrahic (sorry, I guarantee you I spelled that wrong) mottling on her belly, near the hindquarters, and her tail about 6 weeks ago. It indeed scabbed up and was rather nasty. She lost hair on her tail, as well. I was almost afraid that there was necrotic tissue there for a few days - dark black scabs. We attempted to treat her initially with special shampoo, but when we saw almost no improvement, we put her on a round of Clavimox antibiotic (and more shampooing). Her skin has improved 99%, save one or two spots. I fear we could be in your same situation eventually. We are due for another medication cut, we are currently only on 5mg prednisilone EOD. Her last PCV was an astounding 55, perhaps we can go to 2.5 mg eod. I know of no alternative treatments at this point, but I did want to indicate that we are experiencing a similar situation. All best! TBO & Lola |
